SPS Adopts Seal of Biliteracy Recognizing Students Proficient in Two or More Languages

Stamford Public Schools (SPS) Superintendent Earl Kim announced today that SPS will recognize students who have studied and attained proficiency in English and another language at the time of graduation will be awarded a Seal of Biliteracy on their transcripts and diplomas. The seal recognizes the value of students’ academic efforts, the tangible benefits of being bilingual and biliterate, and prepares students to be productive contributing members of our global society. The Seal of Biliteracy was signed into law by the Governor of the State of Connecticut in June 2016. Connecticut is among only 27 states to adapt this designation.

NELMS Renews Scofield Magnet Middle School’s Designation as One of Only 34 Spotlight Schools

Stamford Public Schools (SPS) announced Thursday that the New England League of Middle Schools (NELMS) has renewed Scofield Magnet Middle School’s designation as a NELMS Spotlight School. The Spotlight School Award recognizes schools that have a record of powerful and research-based learning for young adolescents and consistently observe middle level best practices.

SPS Named Three Central Office Positions as Part of Reorganization

Superintendent Stamford Public School (SPS) Earl Kim and the Stamford Board of Education (BOE) named Dr. Tamu Lucero, Assistant Superintendent—Elementary, as the SPS Deputy Superintendent, and Stratford BOE Chief Operations Officer (COO), Clarence Zachery, as SPS Chief Fiscal and Operations Support Officer (CFOSO), at the January 23, 2018, regular BOE meeting. Additionally, as part of the Central Office reorganization, Dr. Michael Fernandes, Assistant Superintendent—Secondary, has been appointed to the position of Associate Superintendent for Intervention and Student Support Services. All positions will be effective July 1, 2018.
