Pulaski Dam Removal and Tidal Wetland Restoration

Work done at Pulaski Spring 2009 Pulaski Dam: The Army Corps of Engineers project, begun in 2009, calls for removing the dams at Pulaski and at the Mill Pond that currently impede fish movement, navigation by small boat, and water flow in the Mill River.

Historians believe that there were two grist mills near what is now the Pulaski Bridge and that a dam was first built here for the mills in 1708. It is said that the bridge wasn't built until 1887 and was reconstructed in 1988. The Pulaski dam was directly under the bridge and not visible from the roadway, so most of the Stamfordites who used the Pulaski Bridge were unaware of the dam. However, the fish knew that they had to wait for high tide to travel to and from the Mill River to the West Branch of the Stamford Harbor. Likewise, kayakers, canoers, and those with other small boats knew that travel between the Mill River and the Stamford Harbor was impossible without difficult portage over the Pulaski dam.
