Live in HD at The Ridgefield Playhouse: Les Contes d’Hoffmann, Iolanta/Bluebeard’s Castle, Skylight
From New York and London, world-class opera and theatre are Live in HD at The Ridgefield Playhouse. Offenbach’s Les Contes d’Hoffmann will be a live simulcast on Saturday, January 31, at 12:55 p.m. with Vittorio Grigolo in the title role. From the Met on Sunday, February 22, at 12 p.m., Tchaikovsky’s Iolanta and Bartók’s Bluebeard’s Castle will enchant and thrill. Broadcast live from the West End by National Theatre, Skylight starring Carey Mulligan and Stephen Daldry, will be screened on Wednesday, February 25, at 6 p.m. Behind-the-scenes tours of the revered Metropolitan Opera House with insightful commentary by some of the genre’s most celebrated singers make the Met series even more exhilarating.

Westport Arts Center Partners with Wadsworth Atheneum to Explore History of Coney Island in New Exhibition
On Friday, January 23, 6-8pm, the Westport Arts Center will open its doors to “Coney Island: Side Show.”’ Curated by Westport Arts Center’s Artistic Director, Helen Klisser During, “Coney Island: Side Show” features over 50 works by 14 photographers. A companion show to the Wadsworth Atheneum's Coney Island: Visions of an American Dreamland, 1861 - 2008, curated by Robin Jaffee Frank, this exhibition focuses on photographs that depict Coney Island's attraction and transformation of people and place over the last 80 years.

“Cinderella” Perfomances by British Amateur Theater Group
“Cinderella” will be performed on Saturday, February 7 and Sunday, February 8 by the British Amateur Theater Group of Darien at Rogers International School in Stamford as a benefit for Neighbors Link Stamford. The well-known tale takes a few twists and turns with this group, whose performances have delighted both children and adults for over 20 years.

Mystic Aquarium to Host “Trainer Days” Weekends in January
Guests are invited to visit Mystic Aquarium each weekend in January to meet the talented and dedicated team of trainers and aquarists who care for Beluga whales, penguins, seals, sea lions, sharks, alligators, and more during Trainer Days. Sessions will be held every half-hour on Saturday and Sunday during the month of January from 10:30am to 2:30pm in front of the underwater viewing windows of the Foxwoods Marine Theater (on the main floor).

Time for students to apply for scholarships at The Ridgefield Playhouse
The Ridgefield Playhouse is now accepting applications for the Bruce Becker Scholarship Fund, which helps students who will be taking any of the varied songwriting, stand-up comedy and screenwriting workshops being offered at the Playhouse in 2015. An important element of the mission of the Playhouse is to make the arts accessible to everyone, regardless of financial situation. This happens through various programs such as Arts for Everyone whereby tickets are donated to other non-profits, Title One schools and families in low-income areas.

The late Alain Resnais’ HIROSHIMA MON AMOUR, a pillar of the French New Wave (long unavailable for exhibition in the United States due to rights issues) will be released by Rialto Pictures in a spectacular new 4K restoration and will be shown at Stamford's Avon Theatre on Thursday, February 12 at 7:30 p.m. The 1959 film, an official selection of this year’s New York Film Festival, will open theatrically October 17 in New York City at The Film Society of Lincoln Center’s Elinor Bunin Munroe Film Center, and in Los Angeles at Laemmle’s Royal Theatre and other select locations. A national rollout will follow.

Join Mystic Aquarium for a special send-off with Titanic Nights
Nightly before the fateful events of April 15, 1912, first class passengers of the RMS Titanic descended the grand staircase to the boat deck where they enjoyed evening festivities. As a special send-off for the “Titanic - 12,450 Below” exhibit, Mystic Aquarium will be hosting special evening festivities of their own. On Friday, December 26 through Tuesday, December 30, 2014 and again on Thursday, January 1 through Saturday, January 3, 2015, the United Technologies Ocean Exploration Center will be open extended evening hours from 5:00pm to 9:00pm to allow visitors to enjoy the final days of the exhibit.

Santa Drives Fire Truck To Donate Hundreds Of Toys To Stamford Children
On Saturday, December 20 at 1:30pm, members of the Stamford Professional Fire Fighters Association (SPFFA) will depart from the Drill Field at 148 Magee Avenue on an antique fire truck driven by Santa to deliver toys to children across Stamford. Hundreds of toys will be given away to the Franklin Street Shelter, the Salvation Army, the Wilson Food Pantry, pediatric patients at Stamford Hospital and selected families in response to Dear Santa letters.

The Millionaires's Unit. Documentary film at Greenwich Historical Society
The Greenwich Historical Society is hosting a special screening of The Millionaires' Unit on January 29 in conjunction with the current exhibition Greenwich Faces the Great War. The story follows an elite group of college students from Yale who formed a private air militia in preparation for America's entry into WWI. Known as the First Yale Unit and dubbed "the millionaires' unit" by the New York press, they became the founding squadron of the U.S. Naval Air Reserve and were among the first from the United States to enter the Great War.

Matisyahu will return with his eighth annual Festival of Light tour with a stop in Ridgefield this year on Sunday, December 28, at 8 p.m. Joining Matisyahu will be his band Dub Trio and guitar player Aaron Dugan who will play material spanning Matisyahu’s entire career. Matthew Paul Miller, known by his Yiddish and stage name Matisyahu, blends Orthodox Jewish themes with reggae, rock and hip-hop and beatboxing sounds. He first made a name for himself with his album Live at Stubbs, and the album Youth quickly followed. Both subsequently went Gold, and Youth was nominated for the Best Reggae Album Grammy.
