Pequot Library explores pre-revolutionary spread of information with new exhibition to open February 20, 2020
The Pequot Library has announced the opening of its next Special Collections exhibition. Riot, Sedition, Insurrection: Media and the Road to the American Revolution will open to the public on Thursday February 20, 2020 with a cocktail reception and presentation. The exhibition will remain on view through May 3, 2020. In the years preceding the American Revolution, printing presses in the thirteen colonies churned out a wave of seditious literature. A swirl of pamphlets, posters, newspapers, and other print media, not often grounded in fact, fomented a climate of rebellion against the British crown. Looking at the same works that circulated in the streets, coffeehouses, and homes of Revolutionary-era Americans, the exhibition tells the story of how the media environment shifted public opinion from loyalty to rebellion.

Inspirational Survivor and TEDx Speaker Discusses Memoir at Bernard’s Restaurant Author Luncheon Series
Fifteen years ago, enjoying lunch out at a local restaurant - let alone lunch at all -  would been an impossibility for Westport resident Amy Oestreicher. Today, the author is thrilled to share a prix fixe lunch with the community while discussing her newly released memoir My Beautiful Detour: An Unthinkable Journey from Gutless to Grateful as part of the Author Luncheon Series at Bernard's Restaurant. Growing up in the area, Oestreicher was “your everyday teenager.” At nearly 18, she was headed for her prom, college, then hopefully, Broadway, until a blood clot caused her stomach to literally explode, setting her off course. Amy slipped into a coma for months, only to emerge to be told she may never eat or drink again, while coming to terms with a long-kept secret — that she was sexually abused by a trusted mentor. After twenty-eight surgeries and nearly seven years unable to eat or drink anything by mouth, Amy’s digestive system was miraculously surgically reconstructed, and the ability to savor food once again is a joy for which Oestreicher is infinitely grateful.
