LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS returns to Curtain Call April 1
trio.jpg
Before Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, and The Little Mermaid, there was a sinister little houseplant saying, “Feed me.” Howard Ashman and Alan Menken's giddy, gory musical Little Shop of Horrors was their first major hit, running Off-Broadway for five years and spawning a 1986 cult-classic film. Now, on April 1, the show returns to Curtain Call's Kweskin Theatre where it last played in 2002.

Musical activist Johnny Clegg brings South Africa in the form of song when he returns to The Ridgefield Playhouse
JohnnyClegg-473.jpg
It has been a musical journey of more than 30 years for Johnny Clegg, from when he first began to experiment with truly South African cross-over music, and at the same time became a cultural activist in the struggle against apartheid. The Ridgefield Playhouse and Palm Bay International World Beat Series present the Johnny Clegg Band on Wednesday, March 30 at 8 p.m. Special Guest is Johnny’s son, Jesse Clegg. Founder of the seminal South African Bands Juluka and Savuka, Johnny Clegg has become one of South Africa’s most celebrated sons. Johnny campaigned against the injustice of apartheid long before it was popular and lead an integrated band decades before Paul Simon’s Graceland. As a singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, dancer, anthropologist and musical activist, his infectious crossover music—a vibrant blend of Western pop and African Zulu rhythms—has not only broken down musical barriers in his adopted country but has made him an international star. As part of the Palm Bay International World Beat Series, there will be a free wine tasting in the lobby at 7:15 p.m.

Quirky dark comedy by Irish author opens on St. Patrick's day in Stamford
hostage_yudains_2.jpg
In 1959 Dublin, a young British soldier is held captive by the Irish Republican Army while an equally young IRA volunteer awaits execution for killing a policeman. If the British carry out the Irishman's sentence, the IRA will do the same to the Englishman. Playwright Brendan Behan, himself a former IRA member, took this dire premise to mold a sly political satire and local audiences can see it when THE HOSTAGE plays in The Dressing Room Theatre, Stamford, from March 17 to April 3.

Re-live the pops hits of the ‘60s with The Cowsills at The Ridgefield Playhouse on January 31
The_Cowsills_5.jpg
The Ridgefield Playhouse and Pepsi Rock Series Powered by Xfinity bring the ‘60s pop band The Cowsills to the stage on Sunday, January 31 at 8 p.m. Best known for songs ”The Rain, The Park and Other Things,” “Hair,” “Indian Lake” and “Love American Style” - the Cowsill's soaring harmonies reached the top of the charts in the late 1960s. Comprised of a family of musically gifted children and their talented mom, the group was an entertainment phenomenon, appearing on the top variety series of the day including The Ed Sullivan Show, Johnny Carson and The Dean Martin Show and influencing a generation of musicians and artists. They were approached to do a TV series but the producers had already signed an actress to play the mother on the series so it was a no go for The Cowsills. What was the series? It was The Partridge Family! The Cowsills were also spokespersons for the American Dairy Association and appeared in commercials and print ads for milk. The Cowsills disbanded in the early 1970s but most of them have never really left the music business and various members have regrouped through the years. Before the show, visit Bailey’s Backyard (23 Bailey Avenue, Ridgefield) for dinner and receive 10% off when you show your ticket. Media sponsor is The B 107.3fm.
