Mystic Seaport will present its 2017 America and the Sea Award to David Rockefeller Jr. and Sailors for the Sea. Given annually by the Museum, the prestigious award recognizes individuals or organizations whose contribution to the history, arts, business, or sciences of the sea best exemplify the American character.

Curtain Call's 10th anniversary fundraiser is a perfect 10

On Saturday night, May 20, amidst noise-makes, placards and banners, a crowd of nearly 800 jumped to its feet in appreciation of 10 community leaders stepping out of their comfort zones in order to raise funds for Stamford’s longest-running, and only, year-round, nonprofit producing theatre company: Curtain Call.

Hempsted Houses Host Juneteenth Celebration

Join Connecticut Landmarks and the NAACP-New London Branch as we celebrate Juneteenth. We will highlight the African-American history of the Hempsted House and the surrounding neighborhood on Saturday, June 10th from noon to 4 pm. Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the United States announced by Union soldiers in Galveston, Texas with news that the Civil War had ended and that the enslaved were now free. The celebration will feature storytelling, drumming, gospel music, dance, and a dash of history. Enjoy art making opportunities for children and adults, and tabling by New London’s non-profit community.

Paul Anka Celebrates 60 Years in show business with a night of hits at The Ridgefield Playhouse on May 18

Paul Anka has had a storied career, recording and touring the country since becoming famous during the late 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s with hit songs like “Diana,” “Lonely Boy,” “Put Your Head on My Shoulder,” and “(You're) Having My Baby.” He penned the theme for The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson and one of Tom Jones's biggest hits, “She's a Lady,” as well as the English lyrics for Frank Sinatra's signature song, “My Way.” Now, after a sold-out 2015 performance, Paul Anka returns to The Ridgefield Playhouse stage!

Lockwood-Mathews Mansion Museum to present talk on food in American weddings

On Sunday, June 11, 2017, 2:30-4:30 p.m. at the Lockwood-Mathews Mansion Museum, 295 West Avenue in Norwalk, Food Historian Sarah Wassberg will discuss food and its relation to wedding traditions. In her talk, she will illustrate how American weddings went from families in the parlor to today's lavish dinners with dancing. Topics covered include wedding cakes and the peculiar tradition of souvenir cake, at-home wedding breakfasts and standing receptions, especially the preponderance of sweetbreads on wedding menus prior to 1950, and the post-war professionalization of the wedding industry.

The Palace Brings Original Works to Life for Local High School Playwrights

On May 1, three Fairfield County high school students will experience the joy of live theatre in a whole new way – as playwrights. Darien residents Olivia Falkenrath and Quinn Murphy and Bethel resident Ryan Polistena were named winners of The Palace Theatre’s 2017 Ernie DiMattia Emerging Young Artist Scholarship Awards for their writing of an original one-act play. All three will witness their voices and visions come to life with a staged reading by professional actors at The Palace in Stamford.

Celebrate Pequot Library’s musical past with pianist Dr. Orin Grossman and friends on Wednesday, May 17 from 7:00 – 8:30 p.m. Held in conjunction with the current Special Collections exhibition, Pequot Founders: Building a Library and a Legacy, “Music of the Gilded Age” will feature music from Pequot Library’s early years (1890-1917). Enjoy popular Ragtime and Stride standards performed by Dr. Orin Grossman, including Irvin Berlin’s “Play a Simple Melody” and “Sidewalks of New York” with singers Michael and Collin Christie, and Brian Goodman tapping to George Cohen’s “Yankee Doodle Boy.” Barbershop quartet Take 4 will lead a group sing-a-long of classic parlor songs, as a slideshow featuring 19th-century photographs of Southport, CT immerses the audience in historic Southport. This program is free and no registration is required. Light hors d’oeuvres and wine will follow the concert.

Under the Streetlamp is coming to The Ridgefield Playhouse for a live, one-night-only performance on Wednesday, May 17 at 8 p.m. as part of the Ridgefield Magazine Broadway and Cabaret Series partially underwritten by Adam Broderick Salon and Spa. Featuring former leading cast members of hit Broadway musicals including “JERSEY BOYS,” Under the Streetlamp is a concert celebration of classic hits of the American Radio Songbook from the 1950s-1970s. Their shows feature tight harmonies and slick dance moves that take audiences back to an era of sharkskin suits, flashy cars and martini shakers. Also part of the Pepsi Rock Series powered by Xfinity, the show is a flashback to a time when, on hot summer nights, people would gather under a streetlamp to sing their favorite rock and roll songs.
