Connecticut Treasures: Works from Private Collections
From July 2–September 19, 2010 the Florence Griswold Museum in Old Lyme, Connecticut, presents Connecticut Treasures: Works from Private Collections. Much of the state’s rich artistic heritage is privately held; these works have been cherished and preserved by their owners, often over several generations. By drawing upon private collections, Connecticut Treasures opens the door to a diverse selection of art works, many of which have never before been publicly exhibited. Connecticut Treasures comprises over sixty works in a variety of media, including painting, works on paper, and sculpture, all reflecting the diversity of Connecticut’s contributions to American art and the beneficence of its patrons over the past two centuries. This exhibition has been generously supported by the Connecticut Humanities Council, the Chester Kitchings Family Foundation, and the Nika P. Thayer Exhibition and Publication Fund.
Connecticut Treasures reflects the Museum’s ongoing commitment to engaging the public with Connecticut’s artistic heritage. “Private collections are a trove of fresh and unusual material. While visitors will recognize some familiar names, we hope the exhibition will introduce them as well to artists they might not previously have associated with Connecticut,” said Curator Amy Kurtz Lansing.
Located on an 11-acre site in the historic village of Old Lyme, the Florence Griswold Museum is known as the Home of American Impressionism. In addition to the restored Florence Griswold House, where the artists of the Lyme Art Colony lived, the Museum features a modern exhibition gallery, education center, landscape center, extensive gardens, and a restored artist’s studio. The Museum is located at 96 Lyme Street, Old Lyme, CT, exit 70 off I-95 and is open year round Tuesday through Saturday from 10am to 5pm and Sunday 1 to 5pm. Please note that the Museum will be closed July 4. Admission is $9 for adults, $8 for seniors, $7 students, and free to children 12 and under.
