N O I R Exhibition
Recent works by the artist, Ann Chernow, will be featured at PMW Gallery in Stamford, Connecticut, from October 7 through November 22 in a new exhibition entitled N O I R. There will be a reception for the artist on Sunday, October 7, from noon to 4pm at the gallery, 530 Roxbury Road. The artist and master printer, Jim Reed, will also discuss the artwork and the printmaking process at a “walk and talk” at the gallery on November 4 at noon.
Women in 1930s and 1940s American films have long been the inspiration for Chernow’s art. Working from original sources and taking aesthetic liberties, such as using a small gesture or expression to capture a universal emotion, she redeems moments from that genre. As Chernow describes her vision, “I use actual films, studio publicity material, fan magazines and other memorabilia as points of departure. I then freely reinterpret them without altering the spirit of the chosen cinematic information. I try to create a sense of déjà vu or nostalgia without the sentimentality often associated with specific film references. Once experienced, a movie is never totally forgotten. Memories from films can be channels, metaphor and private reverie through which an artist can address the human condition.”
Gallery hours by appointment except for October 7th opening reception and November 4 for the 'walk & talk.'
