Two well-known Darien artists, Karen Vogel and Lori Glavin, will show together for the first time March 2 – 27, 2010 at Art Place Gallery in Fairfield, CT. An opening reception will be held on Saturday, March 6th from 4 to 6 pm at the gallery, located at 11 Unquowa Road, Fairfield, CT. The public is also invited to attend a “walk and talk” luncheon Thursday, March 18th, 2010 at 12 noon, to hear the artists discuss their work. Art Place Gallery, the only non-profit cooperative gallery in Fairfield, is open Tuesday through Saturday, 11:00 to 5:00 pm and by appointment.

Ms. Glavin and Ms. Vogel first met at The Center for Contemporary Printmaking in Norwalk, CT where they both studied the art of printmaking. Both artists use a variety of printmaking techniques in their work and share an interest in the layering of patterns, repetitive marks and using stencils from found materials.

Ms. Glavin will exhibit a series of “paper quilts”, polystyrene constructions and oil paintings. In her work, Ms. Glavin re-interprets the artifacts of daily life. Embracing the relationship between domesticity and art-maklng, Ms. Glavin seeks to find a second use for found objects of personal significance – from supermarket packaging to fabric scraps to cancelled checks. “The theme of renewal and second chances is what interests me. I like finding the beauty in discarded household items that you usually don’t give a second look to”, said Ms. Glavin.

For Ms. Vogel, her printmaking becomes a means of expressing the patterns and mysteries of nature, an interest she has also developed as a landscape designer. “Through the Garden Gate” is a new series that explores the mysteries of hidden and abandoned gardens. These imaginary gardens are shadowy places containing reflections of past lives, botanical forms interpreted through layered techniques and repetitive patterns. Looking past the wrought iron gates of Savannah gardens into an abandoned but beautiful world was the inspiration for Ms. Vogel’s series. Her prints are “like looking through a broken church window into the many layers and patterns of someone’s life.”

Painter, printmaker and collage artist, Lori Glavin has been involved in the visual arts for over 25 years. After earning her BFA from Syracuse University, she worked in New York as a graphic designer and art director. Glavin is an artist member of the Silvermine Guild of Artists in New Canaan, CT and a co-founder of Wilson Avenue Loft Artists in Norwalk, CT.

Ms. Vogel began her art career studying painting and drawing at New York’s Art Students League and The Corcoran School of Art in Washington, D.C. Ms. Vogel teaches at the Darien Art Center and maintains a studio in Norwalk. She exhibits frequently, and her work is in numerous private and corporate collections. Karen nurtures her strong relationship with the natural environment, the source of much artistic inspiration, in graduate studies at the New York Botanical Garden.
