Art of the Northeast (AoNE) is one of the most anticipated regional juried shows of the year at the Silvermine Guild Arts Center located in New Canaan, Connecticut. Traditionally drawing over 1200 entries, AoNE is open to all media and artists throughout New England, New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Celebrating its 60th anniversary, this year’s event will be juried by Douglas Dreishpoon, chief curator at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo, New York. The juried competition/exhibition opens on Friday, May 8th with an awards ceremony open to the public and will run through June 5th, 2009.

“Art of the Northeast is one of the regions oldest exhibitions showcasing the richly diverse talent of work created in the Northeast,” says Gallery Director Jeffery Mueller. “The show gives great insight into the range of artistic practices and concepts being addressed by artists in this vital artistic geographic area. Having Mr. Dreishpoon as juror for the 60th year is a natural fit. He has extensive experience writing about and exhibiting some of the preeminent contemporary artists, as well as, helping to continue the Albright-Knox long standing commitment to exhibiting engaging contemporary art.”

Begun in 1949 as the New England Exhibition, the competition was founded by Guild members Miriam Broudy and Revington Arthur to showcase art from the region. Over the years, this distinguished exhibition has presented over 6,000 works of art. Throughout its history, Art of the Northeast has been a platform for both established and emerging artist, many who have gone on to receive national acclaim. Jurors have included major critics, curators and directors from some of the most influential contemporary art institutions including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, MOMA, The New Museum of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Whitney Museum.
