The University of Connecticut Stamford Art Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibit of recent works by Lori Glavin of Darien, CT and Sam Wiener of New York City. The show juxtaposes painting, sculpture and collage and runs from October 21 – November 23, 2011 at the UConn Stamford Art Gallery in downtown Stamford. The public is invited to the artists’ reception on Saturday, October 22nd, from 2 – 4:30 pm at the gallery, located at One University Place, Stamford.
Sam Wiener will show recent sculptures and collages united by vibrant color and a feeling of whimsy. Mr. Wiener was born in Shreveport, LA in 1928. He studied architecture and art with, among others, Josef Albers and Willem deKooning and graduated with a BFA from the Yale School of Fine Arts in 1951. Following three years in the US Navy, Wiener spent a year working in Paris. He moved to New York City in 1955. As well as studio work and exhibits, he has realized some 80 commissioned artworks, collaborating with many of the country's leading architects including Davis Brody, Kahn & Jacobs, and Kelly & Gruzen. Since 1970, he has concentrated on studio work, teaching, and exhibiting in galleries and museums throughout the U.S. and abroad. Sam Wiener has served as faculty at the School of Architecture, Columbia University, Cooper Union Art School, and the Parsons School of Design, in addition to serving as guest instructor and lecturer at numerous art schools, museums, and universities. He was a Visiting Artist at Anderson Ranch Art Centers in 1990, 1992 and 1993; a MacDowell Fellow in 1991; and a Resident Artist at the Banff Center for the Arts in 1997.
Lori Glavin will exhibit new polystyrene constructions and related color studies in oil. Bright color, strong line and energetic patterns complement Mr. Wiener’s sculptural works. In transforming recycled polystyrene containers from the supermarket, Ms. Glavin’s work links domesticity and art making. Lori says of her work, “I’ve been inspired by household items such as supermarket packaging and junk mail, objects that you usually don’t give a second look. The idea of renewal and second chances interests me”. A painter, printmaker and collage artist, Lori Glavin has been involved in the visual arts for 25 years. After earning her BFA from Syracuse University, she worked in New York as a graphic designer and art director. Glavin is an artist member of the Silvermine Guild of artists in New Canaan, CT and a co-founder of Wilson Avenue Loft Artists in Norwalk, CT. She exhibits her work locally and in Santa Fe, NM.
