Rendering of Duvian Montoya's proposed art project
The City of Norwalk Parking Authority has chosen four artists to create permanent art installations for the South Norwalk train station. The team of David Boyajian of New Fairfield, Matt Rink of Redding and Vincent Appel of New York City has been chosen to install their art in the lobby on the eastbound side of the South Norwalk Railroad Station. Norwalk native Duvian Montoya of Fairfield will be creating art for the tunnel that connects the east and westbound side.
Boyajian, Rink and Appel will create a series of small aluminum sculptures that depict sites, history and culture of Norwalk such as an oyster boat, lighthouse, hat and hatbox. The trio’s portfolio of previous work covers a wide range of public art, sculpture and community-based projects. Boyajian has been producing large-scale sculpture in both wood and metal for over twenty-five years. His previous public art projects can be seen in numerous locations across Connecticut as well as in public and private collections nationally. Most recently Boyajian won a commission to create the 9/11 memorial at Sherwood Island State Park in Westport with collaborative partner Matt Rink. Rink, an artist, designer and sculptor, also carries an impressive portfolio of large scale and socially based public work. Also on the team is architect, Vincent Appel. Founder of Archicorp LLC and Medium, Appel’s portfolio is comprised of numerous large-scale design projects, as well as public art master plans in addition to social design at multiple scales. He is currently an instructor of Architecture and Urban Design at Syracuse University’s Manhattan studio.
Montoya will be designing a mural of silhouetted figures depicting the transit history at the SoNo railroad station and the community. Montoya attended Manhattan’s, School of Visual Arts in Manhattan. He spearheaded a new art gallery and studio space in his hometown of Norwalk, CT called SPAG (Saint Philip Artists’ Guild). He was art director, artist and co-creator of the Peanut Gallery in Santa Fe, NM. Montoya’s recent exhibitions have taken place at the Kyung-In Museum of Art in South Korea, Park Fine Art in Albuquerque NM, Mattatuck Museum in Waterbury, CT, Gallery 707 in Santa Fe, NM and the GE Headquarters in Fairfield, CT. He is also working on future exhibitions in Japan, South Korea, London, New Haven and Greenwich.
Funding for this project has been made available through a grant provided by the Federal Transportation Enhancement Public Art Program. The completed installation of the art will occur in the early part of 2012.
