The Westport Arts Center seeks photographs taken by children and teens ages 5-18 for a juried exhibition. Participants should submit one photo that represents their lives—be it pictures of friends and family, people hanging out, or self portraits. Kids are encouraged to be creative—the only guideline is that there must be at least one person age 18 or under depicted in the photograph.

The winning selections from this contest will be printed, framed, and displayed in the Westport Arts Center Gallery alongside the work of some of history’s most celebrated 20th-century photographers in the upcoming winter exhibition, “Kid Kulture,” which will run from December 10, 2010 to February 20, 2011. All submissions that follow the specified criteria will be displayed in a loop on a television monitor in the gallery during the show.

The complete exhibition, “Kid Kulture,” is intended reflect the photography of an era, and focuses particularly on photographs of children. The Howard Greenberg Gallery in New York City—one of the world’s premier photography galleries—will loan work for the show, and will also jury the selection of kid’s photographs.

“It is quite an exciting opportunity for the kids to have their photographs selected and displayed alongside original images by famous photographers such as Robert Frank, Arthur Leipzig, Helen Levitt, and Henri Cartier-Bresson. Many of these photographers worked in the 1950s and 60s. The children’s photographs will bring a fresh and contemporary perspective to the show,” reported Curator and WAC’s Director of Visual Arts, Helen Klisser During.

Photographers must be between the ages of 5 and 18 and reside in Connecticut. Each applicant should submit one color or black and white photograph to the contest, along with a $25 entry fee ($20 for WAC members). Entries are due by October 15.

For information on how to submit and to download the entry form, visit www.westportartscenter.org.

Scholarships are available for students at the Westport Arts Center’s “Connections” partner schools in Norwalk and Bridgeport.
