“Divine Comedy” opens at WAC This April Fools’ Day
The Westport Arts Center is launching a new exhibition series based on the theme of storytelling, beginning with an exhibition of cartoon art, entitled “Divine Comedy: Drawings by R. Crumb & Roz Chast.” The show is on view from April 1-May 30, and will open with a public reception on Thursday, April 1, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. “Divine Comedy” will be the first exhibition at WAC curated by Helen Klisser During, the new director of visual arts, appointed in January. “I was compelled to unite all of our upcoming exhibitions at WAC this year through a theme, reviving the lost art of storytelling,” she said. Mystic Aquarium seeking recycled art for second annual Scrap Art Sculpture contest
Calling all scrap artists! Mystic Aquarium, a division of Sea Research Foundation, Inc., is holding its second annual Scrap Art Sculpture contest and is seeking marine-themed art created from recycled materials. Draw On! returns to Silvermine Guild Arts Center
The Silvermine School of Art located in New Canaan in partnership with the Aldrich Museum, will be participating in the annual community event, Draw On! On Saturday, March 27th from 9am until 6pm, the School of Art will conduct DRAW UNTIL YOU DROP! This one day event is open to the public and provides an opportunity for continuous, intensive figure drawing with a model, or models, in sustained poses. Participants of all skill levels, ages 16 and up, will be able to work alongside Silvermine faculty, Guild Artists members and students to develop their artistic vision, sharpen skills and energize studio experience through drawing. Eminent juror announced for regional juried art show in Easton

Silences Seen: Watercolors by Bob Callahan
“Silences Seen,” a collection of watercolors by Bob Callahan, is a visual journey of a return to his first passion, the art of the watercolor sketch on exhibition from March 10 through April 30, 2010 at the University of Connecticut Stamford Art Gallery. After over 50 years of working as an award-winning graphic designer with clients including IBM, GE, People’s Bank and Yale Repertory Theatre, Callahan has prepared scenes inspired by his love of the outdoors for a one-person exhibition at the UConn, Stamford Art. The artworks are composed of the artist's travels to Bermuda, Jamaica, Stowe, Vermont, Watch Hill, Rhode Island along with scenes derived from his own Stamford backyard. More

New exhibit at UConn’s Contemporary Art Galleries highlights human rights issues in Rwanda
Internationally acclaimed artist Alfredo Jaar is presenting his latest work – a three-channel video installation memorializing the 1994 mass killing of hundreds of thousands of Tutsis and pro-peace Hutus in Rwanda – at the University of Connecticut’s Contemporary Art Galleries March 24. Born in Santiago, Chile and now a resident of New York City, Jaar has exhibited scores of installations around the world. His provocative art installations and public interventions focus on human rights and contemporary socio-economic issues, combining elements of photography, architecture and filmmaking. More

Starting March 3 through April 30, Weston artist Binnie Birstein and Fairfield artist Susan Newbold will have their work featured at ArtPlace Gallery @ The Watermark at 3030 Park. The title of their exhibit is “Looking Back.” Birstein is an award-winning artist originally from New York City. Her work has been shown throughout the country, most recently at the Silvermine Guild Art Center in New Canaan. Birstein also teaches workshops for teachers and offers small group and private instruction at her studio in Weston. More
