The air is crisp and comfortably cool, the breezes are gentle, and bright hues of gold and red are spreading over New England. This is an excellent time to pick up a paddle a launch one’s kayak or canoe on our local scenic lake or bay. The Small Boat Shop in Norwalk, CT, and people with easily portable boats like kayaks and canoes realize that this is one of the best times to be on the water. Harbors and rivers are not crowded with other boats, the beaches are easily accessible, water in Long Island Sound is still warm from the summer, and most communities that charge out-of-towners to launch boats stop charging fees shortly after Labor Day.

The Small Boat Shop of Norwalk, CT will be running several kayak trips to enjoy the Autumn foliage in Connecticut. Trips on October 14, 20, and 27 will be circuits of Lake Lillinonah in Newtown, and trips on October 21 and 28 will be tidal river trips on the Connecticut River. All of these trips are ideally suited for both novices and experienced paddlers. These trips have proven popular in the past, as the air is pleasantly cool, and the fall scenery is spectacular. Boats and equipment are provided by the Small Boat Shop. The customer merely has to bring lunch, appropriate clothing, and a sense of adventure. Advance registration is required. Contact the Small Boat Shop of Norwalk, CT at 203-854-5223, or www.thesmallboatshop.com.

Lake Lillinonah is a dammed of section of the Housatonic River in Newtown, CT. It is surrounded by scenic wooded rolling hills, with a minimum of shoreline development. This time of year, there is a possibility of spotting an eagle or two.

The Connecticut River trips depart from Deep River, and the scenic route is dictated by the tide, weather, and make-up of the group. The Connecticut River is an American Heritage River, and is rich in history, with every bend connected to an interesting story.

Since 1983, the Small Boat Shop has been the premier source for anyone interested in sea kayaking, rowing, canoeing, and generally exploring the coast in small craft. Several brands of boats are carried, along with a complete selection of paddlesports and kayak fishing accessories and technical clothing. The on-water location makes it easy to try out a kayak before purchasing it. Indoor kayaking lessons run through Winter, and Summer lessons are on Long Island Sound. The staff has a wealth of skill and knowledge and is experienced at picking out the craft that best suits a customer’s needs.
