Creative team Tom Roth and Robin Babbin have joined forces to open Montage Modern and Vintage. Located at 1276 Post Road East in Westport, the store has a truly unique collection of beautifully displayed home furnishings, period lighting, original art and jewelry by local artists. Each piece is vintage, from mid-century modern, to Art Deco, to Mod, and has been beautifully restored to its original condition.
Tom Roth has always had a passion for vintage items and antiques. It was a natural transition from his store and workroom, Weathervane Hill in Norwalk, which carries home furnishing fabrics and furniture. Co-owner Robin Babbin’s background is in graphic and textile design, and was originally design director for Weathervane Hill. The partners travel throughout the world together, and are always inspired by antiques and pieces with history.
“It’s not the period, it’s the piece,” explains Mr. Roth. “The store is an eclectic mix of pieces that are iconic and special. Each piece is one-of-a-kind, and tells a story.” The store’s distinctive inventory currently includes Saarinen chairs c1960s, Gio Ponti table and chairs c1970s, a Pace cocktail table, a Milo Baughman beverage cart, a pair of 1940’s Deco club chairs and a huge selection of “Madmen” barware. “We look for things with clean lines and classic design,” says Ms. Babbin. “Our merchandise is a carefully selected collection of interesting conversation pieces.” Whether an accent piece, artwork, barware, sofa or dining room table, the owners are happy to share the history of the merchandise. In addition, the furnishings are reasonably priced, and interior decorators are on staff available for consultation.
Robin Babbin, her husband and two teen aged daughters have lived in Westport for 20 years. Tom Roth and his wife have been Westport residents for 29 years and have raised their family there. His daughter, son and five grandchildren also reside in Westport. “Montage Vintage and Modern is a fun and inviting store,” continues Mr. Roth, “and we love to share the history and personality of every item.”
