Georgetown, CT – Little girls often dream of a handsome prince charming and their wedding day; others spend lazy summer afternoons with friends, making mud pies and other creative “desserts” in backyard mud puddles. Georgetown native, Liz Wiehe Vitti, has managed to blend many of those dreams into the perfect job--serving up some of the most delectable baked goods in the western Fairfield County—these days, however, she leaves out the mud.
The forty year-old mother of three teens has been helping couples design the wedding cakes of their dreams for a while now, but on Sunday, March 28, 2010, she’ll open the doors of her family-owned and operated cake shop for an official open house.
Beyond weddings, Vitti’s celebratory cakes are just as scrumptious, and often have some sort of theme associated with them. The cake shop bakes for all occasions: birthdays, mitzvahs, showers, retirement, but that’s not all—her cupcakes, cookies, and desserts are yummy works of art.
It was one of those very events [ordering the cake for her eldest son’s first birthday and not being happy with it] that prompted Vitti to get mixed-up in the cake business. That was almost 17 years ago. Before opening her own shop, Vitti apprenticed under Bari-Lynn Cardiff of “Creative Cakes by Bari-Lynn” [a Weston baker] for nine years.
The cake shop mainly works on custom cake orders, in butter cream frosting, but walk-in clients can often find smaller items on-hand in the display case.
The small-town, New England atmosphere amid the neighborhoods along the Route Seven corridor is what led to the location and name for her business. One can hear the joy Vitti holds for her art when she speaks of the lifetime she’s spent in one of those neighborhoods [the same one she lived as a child], “I always loved looking through my mother’s cake decorating books, and making up my own recipes.” When asked why she opened a shop on busy Route Seven, Vitti replies with excitement, “This is the perfect spot for my shop!” The shop is easily reached by car, train [Branchville Station], or even plane [she’s not sure if she’s ever had a client from Danbury Airport though.]
Georgetown Cake Shoppe is conveniently located in Keough’s Hardware Plaza, next door to the new Snap Fitness (formerly The Little Gym). The official address is One Ethan Allen Highway, Ridgefield, CT 06877.
The open house will feature samples of many cakes, cookies, and desserts. The free event is open to the public, and will take place from 11:00 a.m. thru 4:00 p.m. Prospective clients are welcome to pour over the shop sample books during the open house, or, if it is more convenient, they can find many of those pictures on Facebook.
