The mission of the Big Apple Circus is to invigorate communities we serve with the joy and wonder of classical circus. In fulfilling that mission, the Big Apple Circus is partnering with the City of Stamford, Mill River Park Collaborative and the Stamford Downtown Special Services District (“DSSD”) through two events:
Circus Premiere and Circus Gala to benefit Mill River Park and Stamford Downtown:
Big Apple Circus’s arrival in Stamford will be heralded with a special celebratory Gala under the Big Top in Mill River Park on Friday, July 9 featuring the Big Apple Circus Band, performers from the circus and gourmet food from Marcia Selden Catering. On Saturday, July 10 at 12:30 Fairway Market will sponsor the Premiere Performance of Bello is Back! in Stamford as a benefit for Mill River Park and Stamford Downtown. Ticket prices will be the same as regular Circus performances except for a special package which will include preferred seating and gourmet box lunch for adults and kids. The Mill River Collaborative is a non-profit organization dedicated to creating and sustaining a world-class park along the banks of the Mill River in the heart of Stamford Downtown. Under management contract with the city of Stamford, the Collaborative is leading the development of the Park which has already resulted in reestablishing the free flow of the Mill River after 360 years’ of dams, debris, and deterioration of water quality. The next phase of park construction will be between Main and Broad Streets which will ultimately result in the planting of 400 new trees, bike and walking pathways, a great lawn and hopefully a carousel, skating rink and summer fountain. “Hopefully” because private funds are needed to supplement city and federal funds dedicated to building the park. Arthur Selkowitz, Chairman of the Collaborative stated: “ It’s perfect that Big Apple Circus is the first major event to be held in Mill River Park because the Circus exemplifies the kind of fun and family enjoyment that we want Mill River Park to represent for Stamford. Stamford Downtown is the heart of the city where the arts, housing, commerce, and education meet to create a vital neighborhood for all to enjoy. The DSSD (Downtown Special Services District) is responsible for managing and enhancing the Downtown environment through a program of daily street maintenance, attractive streetscape, targeted marketing, strategic economic development, ambassadorial services and engaging signature events. Funds raised from the premiere performance of the Big Apple Circus will be used for downtown beautification efforts and new events designed to attract regional audiences. Sandy Goldstein, President of the Downtown Special Services District said: “ The Big Apple Circus coming to Stamford Downtown is great testimony to the fact that Downtown is the core of Stamford and the place where wonderful happenings occur.
