Charma, Angelo and David Bonanno
Art and life will collide for Charma and David Bonanno when the couple appears in ‘Blindsided by a Diaper: The Musical,’ the next and final event in Curtain Call’s 2007/2008 Musical Mondays series of concert readings. The musical is adapted from the Three River’s Press collection of essays about the changes that couples face in their relationships when children enter into the picture. It’s a subject that the Bonannos know about first hand.

Charma and David are working professional actors whose credits include touring in the long-running, Off-Broadway hits ‘Forbidden Broadway’ and ‘I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change’ and the original Broadway production of ‘The Light in the Piazza.’ But, life for the talented twosome became more complicated when the “duo” became a “trio” and their son Angleo, now almost four years old, was born. It’s a story that they share with the more than thirty writers who contributed to the book.

One of the book’s authors was William Squier, a friend of the Bonannos who also happens to write musicals. Squier immediately saw ‘Blindsided’s’ potential as a stage piece when Curtain Call hosted a party for the book’s publication last summer. Squier, his wife, Beth Levine, and several other contributors performed readings of their essays at the event and the audience response was enthusiastic. “They really seemed to recognize themselves in our stories,” Squier said.

The Bonannos will be joined in the evening by four performers very familiar to Curtain Call audiences: another married acting couple, Shannon and Jeffrey Porper (‘South Pacific,’ ‘Fiorello,’ ‘Pirates!’), plus Michael “Motts” Pelazza (‘Guys and Dolls,’ ‘Heaven Can Wait’) and Ellen Porto (Soon to be seen in ‘Always, Patsy Cline’). Squier’s collaborators on the musical include the book’s editor, Dana Bedford Hilmer, and composer Jeffrey Lodin (“Top of the Heap”). The concert reading will take place on Monday, April 14, at 7:30 pm, in the Kweskin Theatre, with a champagne reception to follow. Curtain Call is located at 1349 Newfield Avenue in Stamford.
