“Peter and the Wolf”, a musical production for children, comes to The Ridgefield Playhouse

Peter and the Wolf

An enchanting event for the whole family, “Peter and the Wolf” is a charming tale about the adventures of growing up set to music by Sergei Prokofiev. This Broadway-like production, produced by The Pushcart Players, will take place at The Ridgefield Playhouse on Saturday, October 30, at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Created by the award-winning Pushcart Players, this event is part of the Pepsi Children’s Series and is underwritten by Kiddy Kars and Wooster School of Danbury. This show’s Union Savings Bank "Arts for Everyone" recipient is Escape to the Arts.

“Peter and the Wolf” provides an introduction to the world of music and musical instruments in an adaptation of the traditional folktale set to music by Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev. In fact, he was commissioned to write the musical symphony to cultivate “musical tastes in children from the first years of school”. As the story goes, danger becomes reality and creative innovation prevails as young Peter meets the challenges of surviving in the outside world. Each character he meets along the way has a particular instrument and a musical theme (called a leitmotif) that is repeated each time the character appears. For example, the bird comes on the stage, and a flute is heard; an oboe heralds the duck; the cat is illustrated by the sounds of the clarinet; French horns are for the wolf; hunters are represented by woodwinds, with gunshots on timpani and bass drum, and Peter himself has string instruments as his leitmotif.
