“Coney Island Mermaids,” a photograph by Robert Sachs (Rowayton), was selected as Best in Show for Rowayton Art Center's Marine and Coastal Art Exhibition and received the Saul White Memorial Award of $250. The Best in Show and 1st Place artwork can be viewed on the RAC web site,

High-quality works in all media are spotlighted in this exhibition which continues at the Rowayton Arts Center through July 28. The RAC gallery at 145 Rowayton Avenue is open from 12:00-5:00 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and from 1:00-4:00 p.m. on Sundays. Admission is free.

The judge was award-winning artist Duvian Montoya, who made his selections from 71 entries. He said, “As a judge, I was looking for work that spoke to the range of emotions that are evoked by coastal living -- like the dreamy fantasy world that is created when the fog rolls in or the carefree sense of the warm sun beating down on our local beaches and the summertime laughs that are brought on by Best in Show winner "Coney Island Mermaids" by Robert Sachs -- a scene that depicts the fun of summer in the freedom of the women with their individual personalities shining through. Even though it was a posed shot, each woman owned her own space and showcased her own character. The eye is constantly looking around at the different personalities and being drawn into their own fun-loving world. There is nothing like coastal life in the summer.”

Award winners by category are: Acrylic – 1st Virginia Jennewein (New Canaan), 2nd Jeannine Soper (Rowayton); Mixed Media – 1st Mary Elizabeth Peterson (Westport), 2nd Carolyn Lyngholm (Cos Cob); Oil – 1st Kendall Klingbeil (Pound Ridge, NY), 2nd Yasemin Tomakan (Old Greenwich), 3rd Wendy Moore (Pound Ridge, NY), honorable mention N.
