For one week only, from November 13 through November 20 at 11 am and 2 pm, Stepping Stones Museum for Children will present an original production, Global Energy – The Musical. The result of a year of planning, development, collaboration and production, the musical combines the insightful writing of children from the United States, the Kingdom of Jordan and Rwanda, the music of acclaimed singer songwriter Tina deVaron and the professional theatrics of Child’s Play Touring Theatre of Chicago.
Global Energy – The Musical addresses complex scientific issues on energy and conservation, presenting them in a whimsical way to our future leaders: the ten and under set. During the production, guests will be taken on a tour of Carbon City to discover the wonders of fire, wind, water and the sun.
Initiated by Stepping Stones, students from across Connecticut were invited to submit essays, poems, and even rap music on their personal views of energy and conservation. An additional number of essays submitted from the Kingdom of Jordan and Rwanda have also been incorporated into the script, written by Christian Vernon, Company Director and stage manager at Child’s Play Touring Theatre.
“At Stepping Stones, we believe in the power of bringing together young people, with all due regard for the now globalized world of new possibilities for intercultural collaboration and understanding,” said Hyla Crane, Director of Education at Stepping Stones. “Global Energy –The Musical addresses the great importance of stewardship in our world.”
The acting company from Child’s Play Touring Theatre will provide a series of workshops to Stepping Stones staff during the week of their residency in Norwalk. These workshops will involve working with the staff on acting, performance sequencing and music. The outcome of this training will be to enable the Stepping Stones staff to provide performances of various components of Global Energy – The Musical in the museum in 2012 and keep the music and the messages of the production alive.
Global Energy – The Musical is part of the celebration of Energy Awareness Month that features programs, performances and activities at Stepping Stones as part of a $10,000 grant from the Connecticut Energy Efficiency Fund.
