“Green Eggs and Hamlet, anyone,” jokes Curtain Call Executive Director Lou Ursone, as he tells about this summer’s activities at the Sterling Farms Theatre Complex. “We’re celebrating two of the best writers ever, throughout all of our programming” Ursone noted saying that the works of Shakespeare and Dr. Seuss will be a focal point of his organization’s activities.

This summer marks the 5th annual free Shakespeare on the Green presentation for the Stamford theatre company. Their production of ROMEO AND JULIET, directed by Peter Barbieri, Jr., will be performed on their own version of The Globe Theatre stage on the great lawn at Sterling Farms from July 11 through 18. “As we have for the past four years, we’ll be offering a great, family-friendly production of one of the best-known works of literature in the world,” said Ursone.

Later in the summer, Curtain Call’s annual summer youth theatre presentation will showcase the work of Dr. Theodore Geisel - best know as Dr. Seuss – with the musical comedy, SEUSSICAL. Featuring area performers age 10 through 21, SEUSSICAL will play 12 performances in the air-conditioned Kweskin Theatre, August 6 through 17. “This program is offered free to participants, and is always a highlight of our summer here at Curtain Call,” said Brian J. Bianco, Education Director and head of the summer program. Students from all over Fairfield, and nearby Westchester counties audition each summer to be a part of these productions. (Auditions for this production will be held May 27 and 31 – contact Bianco at 203-329-8207 x16 for more information.)

“Additionally, we’ll be using the works of Dr. Seuss as a base for our SummerStock Jr. performance workshops,” said Bianco. Curtain Call offers four separate two-week, full-day workshop sessions throughout the summer: SummerStock for ages 11-16 and SummerStock Jr. for ages 6 – 11. All classes are held at The Sterling Farms campus with a wide variety of teaching artists. “For our older group of performers, we’ll be focusing on the works of Shakespeare. When we get to musicals, we’ll look at great adaptations from Shakespeare including KISS ME KATE and WEST SIDE STORY,” said Bianco.

When asked about the Shakespeare on the Green program, Ursone beams. "The responses and support received from our audiences over the past few years has been phenomenal" said Ursone. "If ever there was a case of 'if you build it, they will come' this is surely it" he added. "Free outdoor Shakespeare is a summer ritual all around the world, but hadn't been a part of the Stamford cultural landscape until we kicked off this program in 2004" Ursone said. As Stamford's longest-running community-based non-profit theatre, this program was a logical extension for their expanding base of programs.

To support the growing demand for these productions, this year's presentation will include a Sunday evening performance. “Outdoor Shakespeare is a terrific way to introduce audiences to the works of The Bard," according to Ursone. "The casual atmosphere makes the entire event less intimidating - more accessible - and ultimately more enjoyable," he added. "From Shakespeare aficionados to those hearing his words for the first time, young and old alike will enjoy this production" he added. "This is a truly terrific, full-family event" Ursone said, noting the many families in attendance over the past three years.

This program, the brainchild of Barbieri, is the result of a major collaboration on the part of Curtain Call, The Stamford Golf Authority and The Royal Green Restaurant", said Ursone. "It's an absolutely amazing time for all of us here at Sterling Farms" Ursone said. "For years people talked about having free Shakespeare in Stamford and now it's a tradition" Ursone added. "We are thrilled to be able to provide this annual event free to area residents through the generous financial support of several wonderful sponsors like The Connecticut Commission on Culture and Tourism, The Garden Homes Foundation, The Fairfield County Weekly and many individuals."

Performances begin at 7:30 PM each evening. Park opens for picnic and seat selection at 6:00 PM. Food and drink are available on site through The Royal Green Restaurant but special advance orders may also be made by calling the restaurant at 203-322-6244. Additional parking is available across the street at Davenport Ridge School. Admission is free with suggested contributions of $10 & $20. As part of the collaboration with The Hammond Museum in nearby North Salem, NY, Curtain Call will be bringing this production to their beautiful gardens for one performance on Friday evening, July 25.

But before all of “the summer” programming kicks in, Curtain Call’s final production of the 2007 – 2008 season, ALWAYS…PATSY CLINE, will be presented in The Dressing Room Theatre from June 6 – 28. Advance ticket sales have been so strong according to Ursone that two performances have already been added to their schedule. Starring in the title role of one of the music world’s best loved singers will be Curtain Call co-founder, Lynne Colatrella, who will share the stage with Stamford resident Ellen Krinick Porto as the Texas housewife who became very good friends with Cline over a few brief years. (The Dressing Room Theatre is a ‘bring your own everything’ style dinner theatre, with cabaret-style seating, and is also located at The Sterling Farms complex.)
