TESS students performing at the 2009 SoNo Arts Celebration
TESS – Talent Education Suzuki School of Norwalk will present a free “hands on” family concert at the East Norwalk Library, Van Zilen Community Hall on Thursday, July 29, starting at 5:30 pm. The performance will be followed by a free Pizza Party contributed by Norwalk Pizza and Pasta, and refreshments. Becki Christopherson, TESS Music Director, explains, “We encourage our students to share their music regularly with the community. It is very meaningful and motivational for them to see the joy their music brings to others.”
Fifteen TESS students between the ages of four and sixteen will perform a variety of musical pieces on the violin, cello and guitar. The concert itself will last about 30 minutes and conclude with an “Instrument Petting Zoo” where the children in the audience will have an opportunity to play small-sized violins, cellos and guitars themselves. Afterwards there will be time for discussion with the gifted TESS faculty as well as pizza and refreshments for all who attend.
TESS, now at 3 Quincy Street in Norwalk, began in 2005 out of a strong commitment to the philosophical ideals of Dr. Shinichi Suzuki and a dedication to musical excellence. Dr. Suzuki believed, as do the faculty and staff at TESS, that every child has the ability to express themselves musically when given that chance to develop that ability. Tess in Norwalk has grown from 80 to 150 students since its beginning. This includes introductory classes for children from ages 2 to 5, a chorus for children ages 5 to 7, and a variety of elective classes for the advanced students wishing to expand their musical horizons.
“The TESS -- Meet the Instruments and the Children that Play Them” event is sponsored by the East Norwalk Improvement Association at its East Norwalk Library,” explains Stan Siegel, Executive Director, “as part of the Library’s “Encouragement Program” – which enables children, students, teens, and adults to have their creative work shared as a testament to their imagination, skills, thoughts, and experiences.
