NEW CANAAN, CT - The Treetops Chamber Music Society opens its 2018 Spring Series on March 25 with the Heath Quartet from London. Praised for its “unforced beauty and tremulous tension” (The Times of London) and “exquisite tenderness” (The Telegraph), the Heath Quartet comes to New York City for a Lincoln Center Great Performances concert and its debut at Treetops CMS.
The program opens with one of Haydn’s groundbreaking Apponyi Quartets, composed after Haydn’s first trip to London in 1790. Tchaikovsky’s String Quartet, subtitled “Accordion” for its opening chords, includes the famous second movement, inspired by a Russian Folk song, which has been arranged for every conceivable instrumentation. The discovery work in the program is Jörg Widmann’s String Quartet No. 4, which The Guardian describes as astoundingly virtuosic…, mentally and musically, and jaw-droppingly beautiful at times…”.
“We are excited to have a European string quartet for the first time at Treetops CMS,” said Treetops CMS artistic director, Oskar Espina Ruiz. “The Heath Quartet is phenomenal! In addition, Jörg Widmann’s music is sure to add a rich dimension to the program. Widmann’s compositions have been premiered by orchestras such as the Vienna Philharmonic, Berlin Philharmonic and New York Philharmonic.”
This concert is on Sunday, March 25, 2018, at 4:00 p.m. at the Carriage Barn Arts Center, 681 South Avenue, New Canaan. For direction go to treetopscms.org/locations.
