The Florence Griswold Museum is a National Historic Landmark that was once home to a group of artists known as the Lyme Art Colony, the center of American Impressionism. Situated along the picturesque Lieutenant River in Old Lyme, Connecticut, the Museum includes the historic Griswold Home and gardens, a riverfront gallery, a restored American Impressionist artist’s studio, and a renowned American art collection. Instituted over thirty years ago as a cultural and social outing for The Stamford Historical Society’s members, The Stamford Historical Society’s day trips have become an annual tradition providing members and non-members alike the opportunity to explore some of Connecticut’s historic treasures in a congenial group atmosphere. The day will begin with refreshments and orientation information on the morning ride to the Museum by air-conditioned motor coach. The bus, equipped with a restroom, will depart from Stamford (specifically, Lord & Taylor’s lower level parking lot adjacent to Long Ridge Road) at 8:30 a.m. for the approximate one-hour ride to the Museum. At the Museum, the group will tour the upcoming exhibit, “Impressionist Giverny: American Painters in France, 1885-1915,” as well as the Griswold Home, which is staffed with a trained guide who will give the group an introduction to the site. Before lunch, the group also will have some free time during which to browse the Museum Shop or take self-guided tours of the grounds and historic gardens. Lunch will be provided and is included in the ticket price. The group will enjoy a three-course luncheon (salad, choice of entrée, dessert, and beverages) at the Old Lyme Inn. Voted “Best Overall Restaurant of 2007” for New London County by readers of Connecticut Magazine, the Inn is located just across the street from the Museum on historic Lyme Street. After the bus departs for Stamford in the early afternoon, refreshments will be served. Tickets for the day are $90 for members, $95 for non-members.
