If Hartford’s “Week of the Parks” is going to be a success, the community must get involved. That’s why the City is calling on volunteers to roll-up their sleeves, rake, and be ready to make our public places clean, green, and beautiful during the Citywide Community Clean-up on Saturday, August 28th starting at approximately 9AM.

Volunteers are asked to register through the Knox Parks Foundation, 75 Laurel Street in the City’s Asylum Hill neighborhood. The phone number is (860) 951-7694 x14 or you can fill out and email the attached form to charmainec@knoxparks.org. The form is also available at www.hartford.gov on the main page.

Mayor Pedro Segarra says, “This is an exciting opportunity for people who love Hartford to show their pride. This is a beautiful city and if we all work together, we can really showcase our historical, cultural, and educational venues. I want to thank the tireless efforts of our partners like Riverfront Recapture, Knox Parks, and the Hartford Public Library. However, the key to the overall success is for residents and stakeholders to be involved. Our dedicated employees will be out there working with you every step of the way.”

The “Week of the Parks” is part of a long-term vision and strategy for the future of Hartford --- “One City, One Plan” for conservation and development.

There are several important elements of this greening campaign including job creation, the physical clean-up and repair, health and recreational activities, and educational events. 34 people have been hired or rehired for this extensive park and cemetery maintenance effort. This will include tree-trimming, mowing, making repairs to stages, benches, and sports facilities and picking-up litter. This effort is already underway and will intensify leading up to the “Week of the Parks.” The Health and Human Services Department will sponsor additional recreational activities--- and the pools will be open this week--- as part of its “Healthy Hartford” campaign. Panel discussions and the first public meeting of the Green Ribbon Task Force will be part of our educational evening events.

Here’s the calendar:

August 21 and 22: Riverfront Dragon Boat and Asian Festival at Mortensen Riverfront Plaza.

August 23: Keney Park at Woodland Street.

August 24: Colt Park at Wawarme Street.

August 25: Goodwin Park at Maple Avenue.

August 26: Bushnell Park at Elm Street.

August 27: Keney Park at Barbour Street.

August 28: Citywide Community Clean-up.

Stay tuned! More details to come!
