Fourth Time City Honored with Livability Award

Stamford, Connecticut—Thursday, May 15, 2008--Mayor Dannel P. Malloy announced today that the City of Stamford has been named one of the finalist Cities for the 2008 U.S. Conference of Mayors/Waste Management City Livability Awards. Over 200 applications from cities across the country were received, and Stamford has been selected as one of only 15 entrants to move on to the second rotund.

Stamford's nomination of the City Zoning Board for creating and adopting Section 7.3 – Special Exception for Historic Buildings has been deemed worthy of this recognition.

The City's unique and innovative approach balances historic preservation and the retention of affordable rental and home ownership opportunities. This is a significant challenge in an area with some of the highest real estate values and development pressures in the nation_ Properties must be located in approved residential, commercial or industrial zones, be listed or eligible for the National or State Register of Historic Places, or be of local architectural or historical significance as certified by preservation experts.

The project provides for the adaptive use of historic structures for affordable housing and economic development activities. It has resulted in the preservation of 36 historic structures, and the creation of 67 additional units of housing. The City's Community Development Department has leveraged the Sec. 7.3 advantage with Federal subsidies to create 41 units of deed restricted affordable or supportive housing.

The 2008 City Livability Award recipients will be announced in June during the City Livability Awards luncheon at the 761h Annual U.S. Conference of Mayors in Miami.

The U.S. Conference of Mayors is the official nonpartisan organization of cities with populations of 30,000 or more. There are 1,239 such cities in the country today, each represented in the Conference by its chief elected official, the Mayor.

Mayor Malloy has held many leadership roles with the U.S. Conference of Mayors and is currently a Trustee, a position he has held since 2003.
