Stamford, Connecticut — Wednesday, July 9, 2008 — Mayor Darnel P. Malloy released today the City of Stamford and Board of Education year end statistics regarding safety for the 2007/2008 fiscal year. The City wide goal for accident reduction and accident cost reduction is 10% per year. There were 563 injuries City wide in 2007/2008. This number of accidents represents a 9% decrease compared to the prior year. It also is the lowest number of accidents occurring in any of the past nineteen years. Cost incurred for losses due to accidents has decreased 6% from the prior fiscal year.

The Police Department ended the year with 174 injury incidents, which is also the lowest number of incidents in the last five years. The Police Department also reduced its injury costs to the lowest amount in five years. Other departments reaching a five year low in incidents and or incident costs include Stamford Fire and Rescue and Operations.

Due to the efforts of the City's Safety & Training Officer, Phil Cundiff, employee safety training has increased 55% over the prior year, with a total of 2206 employees receiving training. Phil also serves in an advisory capacity on all Safety Committees. The safety committees and safety training have played a significant role in some of the individual department's achievements. Police Chief Larrabee, Chairman of the Police Department Safety & Health Committee, is involved in safety & health concerns at all levels of his department. The Police Department has also invested in equipment and training that help enable the patrol officers perform their jobs in a safer manner.

Stamford Fire & Rescue has a very active Safety & Health Committee, which includes command staff along with rank and file members. The committee meets monthly, discussing and taking action steps on all safety & health issues that are brought to the table, Once again they were able to reduce their injury incidents, even after having a huge reduction in the prior fiscal year. Stamford Fire & Rescue has also invested in equipment and training to make their firefighters' jobs safer,

The Board of Education started the fiscal year with an injury rate well above the prior year's rate. In the last five months of FY 2007/2008 they went from a 5% increase over the FY 2006/2007 injury rate to being 14% lower than the FY 2006/2007 rate. This change in incident rate can be attributed to increased Safety & Health Committees, and meetings at both the District and school levels, in addition to increased safety training,

The Operations Bureau as a whole had a great reduction in injury incidents and incident cost. The individual units have increased their safety awareness training, and the Bureau has invested in new equipment such as the lift assist collections trucks, which improve employee safety. Other departments such as the Smith House and the SWPCA have increased their safety awareness training, enabling them to reduce their injury incidents and costs.

Though FY 2007/2008 was a successful year for reducing injuries and injury related expenses, the City wide goal continues to remain reducing these losses by at least 10% during this fiscal year.
