As Connecticut copes with the fourth day of a major, early spring heat wave, Governor M. Jodi Rell urged residents and businesses to voluntarily reduce electrical demand as much as possible to avoid overstraining the power grid. Theres only one word for this weather: miserable, Governor Rell said. The combination of temperatures in the mid- and upper-90s and tremendously high humidity is making everyones lives a little more difficult. So far our power grid has held up well apart from thunderstorm-related outages and ISO-New England, which operates the grid for the region, has not issued any alerts or requests to conserve. Nevertheless, there are steps we can all take that will ease the load until the weather cools. It looks likely that the heat wave will break Tuesday night, the Governor said. Our normal spring weather should be back for a curtain call before we truly get into the height of the summer heat. This early heat wave is a chance for all of us to get in the habit of conservation and with energy prices on a dizzying upward spiral, that is a good idea even when the weather is more moderate. On Monday, Governor Rell asked all state agencies to help conserve power during the heat wave. That request remained in effect Tuesday. ISO-New England offers these power-saving tips for homes and businesses: RESIDENTIAL - Raise air conditioning thermostats by a few degrees - Shut off air conditioners when leaving home for an extended period of time - Turn off unnecessary lights and appliances - Defer laundry until evening hours COMMERCIAL - Raise air conditioning thermostats by a few degrees - Turn off unnecessary lights, non-essential computers and equipment and if feasible 50 percent of the copiers - Consider using battery-powered laptop computers in place of desktops or docking stations © Copyright by StamfordPlus.com.
