Holocaust commemoration program to be presented at CHJ

A Yom Ha'Shoah (Holocaust Commemoration) Program will be presented by the Congregation for Humanistic Judaism (CHJ) on Friday, May 6, 2011, at 7:30 pm, at the Southport Congregational Church, 524 Pequot Ave, Southport CT.

The trailer for the new film “Alice: Dancing Under the Gallows” will be shown. Turning 107(on November 26, 2010, Alice is the oldest survivor of the Holocaust and the second oldest person living in London, England. She was a renowned concert pianist and a close friend of Franz Kafka. She has seen and lived through more than you can imagine. And despite all she’s experienced, her extraordinary optimism and attitude is what stands out the most.

CHJ member and Wilton resident Lou Reens also survived the Holocaust as a hidden child in Holland and he will speak of his personal experiences. Joining him will be Westport resident Anita Schorr and Trumbull resident Zelig Preis, who will also speak about their experiences as Holocaust survivors.

Local Westport poet Stephen Herz will read selections from his Holocaust poetry, including the one he wrote for Anita Schorr.

The program is open to the public and will start at 7:30 PM. For more information, contact 226-5451.

The Congregation for Humanistic Judaism is a welcoming, supportive community, founded in 1967, for secular Jews and their families to affirm, celebrate, and enrich Jewish identity and values. CHJ believes in personal responsibility to fulfill the Jewish ideals of loving-kindness, justice, and good deeds. Humanistic Judaism is a recognized branch of Judaism, active worldwide.

CHJ has a full Sunday school program from pre-K leading to Bar and Bat Mitzvah, and a full program of events for adults that includes Jewish holiday celebrations, Friday evening and Sunday morning programs, book and film groups, and other activities.
