Local celebrities dancing for fund-raiser
Marc Peyser and Kremena Koleva
Aligning peoples' backs may be his "day" job, but on May 17, Dr. Marc Peyser may have to heed the age old advice of "physician, heal thyself" when he struts his stuff and bends his back in Curtain Call's DANCING WITH THE STARS, STAMFORD. Peyser is one of 11 area Star Dancers who have been preparing for this event since late February.

Organized by Stamford's long-running, non-profit theatre company, Curtain Call, DANCING WITH THE STARS, STAMFORD is patterned after the hit TV show. "Just like the show, we have dance professionals partnered with non-dancers – in this case they're leaders from our community" said Lou Ursone, Curtain Call Executive Director. "The response has been phenomenal" Ursone noted, adding that many other community leaders have already signed up to be Star Dancers for next year! The one night only event will be held at the area's newest industrial chic party space, The Loading Dock, in Stamford.

In addition to Peyser, Star Dancers include: Janice Arpaia – Cablevison News 12; Dr. Johnnie Lee - Stamford Health Department; Sarah Arnold - Stamford Board of Education;Julia Frisoli - Actress; Jami Sherwood - Simply Signs; Lynn DiMenna - Cabaret Artist; Sandy Goldstein – Stamford Downtown Special Services District; Matt Zako - Cox Radio Star 95.9 DJ; Juanita James - Pitney Bowes; and Joyce Mazur – UBS. Dance professionals from Ballroom Dancesport, Dance-Fit, Latin Moves Dance Center, Maria Fiora's Latin & Ballroom Dance Center and Metropolitan Dance Center have been working these Star Dancers to the bone and getting them ready for their stage time.

"Our event will include behind the scenes rehearsal video vignettes, backstage interviews and, of course, judging by the audience as well as from a panel of esteemed ejudicators" Ursone said. Additionally the event will include a silent auction of theatre-themed items, food and beverage from many of the area's leading restaurants and caterers, as well as a champagne toast and dessert buffet to cap off the evening. "We expect this to be the 'must see' special event of the year," Ursone said. "We've all hosted or attended countless fund-raising dinners, so this event gives us a chance to really break away from that mold and have a great time while raising money for Stamford's longest-running community-based theatre operation," he added. Part of the fund-raising will come through fans and friends "voting" for their favorite dancer. "Think of it like sponsoring someone in a walk-a-thon or bowl-a-thon type event," said Ursone. "The idea is to have some fun while fund-raising and getting people to pledge you or vote for you is part of the whole plan," he noted.

The Star Dancers, none of whom have any professional dance experience, and most who had no dance training whatsoever prior to starting in this program, have all been preparing for several weeks. They are all volunteering their time to help raise funds for Curtain Call, but none of them have been too quick to consider auditioning for one of Curtain Call's productions. Afternoon radio DJ Matt Zako from Cox Radio 95.9 The Fox said jokingly of performing on a Curtain Call stage, "If it's anything like I've had to go through here – ABSOLUTELY NOT!" "I would definitely recommend ballroom dancing" Zako added.

"The reason that I am dancing for this event is that I am absolutely crazy," quipped Arnold when asked why she is participating. She noted that her years of running and working out didn't translate to the dance floor. Frisoli, an actress who is used to being in front of an audience, remarked that the best thing of participating for her is "the sense of accomplishment." "Anyone can do it (ballroom dancing). I'm having a blast dancing around the house all the time," she added.

"Beyond the great volunteer support of our Star Dancers and the contribution of time and talent from our professional dance partners, we also have amazing support from Absolut Vodka, Bennett's Steak and Fish, The Capital Frille, Columbus Park Trattoria, David's Catering, Heineken, Il Falco Ristorante, Michele's Pies, Napa & Co., RuLu's River Café, Strada 18 and W.J. Deutsch & Son, Ltd.," Ursone said. "They're making sure we're all very well fed and have plenty to drink," noting specifically a martini fountain from Absolut Vodka. "We're also extremely fortunate to have corporate sponsorship from The Loading Dock, Access Securities, Pitney Bowes and Hampton Inn & Suites" Ursone said.

The past 36 years have been filled with live theatrical programming at Sterling Farms. Curtain Call has managed the theatre complex since 1992 and, in the past 8 years alone under Ursone's leadership, has produced over 100 plays, musicals, comedies and other entertainments. "I got my start in this business on the stage of The Kweskin Theatre," Ursone said. "I've enjoyed a wonderful career as a professional actor on stage, film and TV and much of that is due to the nurturing, educational atmosphere that has been part of the programming here all along. The community has supported us all these years, and I'm sure the community will help us again in this major fundraising program," he added.
