Stamford, CT – June 10, 2010 – Mayor Pavia today announced that he will award the Mayor’s Cup trophy to the captain of the fastest spinnaker equipped yacht at the Halloween Yacht Club’s 25th Annual Mayor’s Cup Race. The Mayor’s Cup Trophy is the top prize in the annual race which kicks off the 2010 sailing season this Sunday, June 13 at 11:20 A.M. Halloween Yacht Club commodore, Tony Loglisci and race chairman Jamie McCreary expect approximately 50 yachts to compete in the race that is co-sponsored by the Breakwater Irregulars.
“This is a terrific event for Stamford in that it draws attention to one of our most treasured resources, our beautiful shoreline and Long Island Sound,” Mayor Michael A. Pavia. “And I love this event because it gives something back to Stamford youths that they would not have the privilege of enjoying if it weren’t for this event and the Halloween Yacht Club,” he said.
The race takes place over a 10 to 15 nautical mile course beginning at Red Bell “32” (The Cows buoy) and Mid-Sound Buoy “32A). Loglisci says that, “Stamford’s association with the sea fosters community spirit. It also expands our community’s pride in one of our city’s greatest natural resources, our waterfront, while highlighting boating, one of our favorite recreational activities.”
Receipts in excess of expenses will be donated to the Young Mariners program of the Stamford Sailing Foundation, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that offers at-risk public school children sailing instruction and other opportunities to enjoy Long Island Sound.
