NEW HAVEN, CT - The City of New Haven estimates a total accumulation of 19 inches of snow as a result of the storm that occurred Tuesday evening into Wednesday midday, making this the largest snowstorm that the City has experienced since 1978. Despite the heavy snowfall, there have been no major weather-related incidents reported in the City. Mayor John DeStefano, Jr. strongly encourages residents to remain in their homes while crews continue to clear the roads.

The City’s first priority through midnight tonight is to enable the emergency passage of vehicles on all roads. After midnight and throughout Thursday, the focus will be on street widening. Late Thursday, the City will focus on snow removal. As roads are plowed, residents may experience snow being pushed into their driveways and are asked to be patient as City crews work to make roads passable.

A parking ban will go into effect downtown beginning at 11 p.m. tonight until 6 a.m. tomorrow morning. There will be an odd side parking ban in effect in residential zones tomorrow, requiring residents to park on the even numbered side of the streets. Wherever possible, the City is asking residents to remove vehicles from the street. Beginning at 8 p.m. tonight, residents are encouraged to utilize the City’s school parking lots overnight rather than on-street parking. New Haven Public Schools will be closed on Thursday, enabling the City to focus its resources on street clearing.

The New Haven Parking Authority is also offering off-street overnight parking at several locations throughout the City until 8 a.m. Thursday. These locations include:

Surface lot at Chapel and Franklin Street (no charge)
Surface lot at Chestnut Street (no charge)
Surface lot at State and Pulaski (no charge)
Surface lot at Grand Avenue and East Pearl Street (no charge)
Crown Street Garage ($3.00)
Granite Square Garage (no charge)
Temple Street Garage ($3.00)

Residents are encouraged to contact the City’s Emergency Operations Center at 203-946-8221 with any storm-related concerns. The Emergency Operations Center will remain open overnight. Additionally, representatives from the City’s Livable City Initiative are available to provide assistance to New Haven residents who are experiencing a loss of heat or other essential utilities. LCI representatives can be reached at 203-946-6237 for housing utility emergencies. The City of New Haven’s government offices will re-open at 9 a.m. tomorrow morning for business as usual.

Mayor John DeStefano, Jr. would like to acknowledge the hard work of City employees during this storm, specifically the Department of Public Works, the Parks Department and the City’s public safety officers.
