Money to go towards environmental and coastal educational programs

State Representative Carlo Leone (D-Stamford) has announced the release of $6,000 in state funding that will go towards SoundWaters Coastal Education Center located in Stamford’s Cove Island Park.

“I’m glad I was able to work with SoundWaters in supporting such a worthwhile program and I am proud to have their facility located within my very own district,” Leone said.

The state money for SoundWaters will be targeted towards education programs for Stamford public school children in order to support the programs SoundWaters offers free of charge. These programs – the Explorers Series – support and amplify key science concepts through hands-on exploration along the shores of Long Island Sound at the Coastal Education Center at Cove Island. In the past, Stamford’s elementary school students studied oceans and marine habitat, but had no opportunity to learn about these subjects with real life, first-hand experience by the ocean.

“This money is essential to allow SoundWaters to continue what they do so well, which is to educate children about the world they live in, the environment, and marine life habitat,” Leone said.

He added, “I think having this first-hand experience with nature will teach these students how to become good stewards in protecting the environment and give them a deeper appreciation and understanding of their natural surroundings.”

Leigh Shemitz, Executive Director of SoundWaters, said, “Now, with the explorers program – supported in part by the state funds – all elementary school children learn about the habitats of Long Island Sound, and the adaptations of key species, through hands on exploration with our trained education staff, right here in the beaches and marshes of the Sound.”

The SoundWaters Center is open from 10:00 - 5:00 daily, Tuesday through Saturday from Memorial Day to Labor Day.

Rep. Leone is serving his third term as Representative of the 148th District. He is Chairman of the Regulations Review Committee and is a member of the Finance Committee and the Transportation Committee.
