The National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Connecticut Chapter has named Courtney Walsh, a financial analyst with UBS, a 2008 MS Corporate Achiever. Walsh is one of 33 Corporate Achievers in Connecticut and one of only six business leaders to receive the honor in Fairfield County.
I want to help people become more aware of multiple sclerosis,” said Walsh. “I also want more people to become aware of how it affects young people like myself.”
Walsh, a resident of Stamford, graduated from the University of Connecticut in 2000 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science.
She has been employed by UBS as a financial analyst in Stamford for three years.
For nearly a decade, Walsh has been involved with volunteer efforts in her personal life and professional career.
As an employee of UBS, she has been a volunteer with the company’s Power Lunch program. Walsh is one of more than 250 UBS employees that participate in the program that pairs professionals with elementary school students to practice reading at lunch once a week. Walsh has been reading with second- and third-graders in the Stamford Public School system.
Since 2000, Walsh has volunteered with the Stamford Public Education Foundation and has volunteered for the National MS Society for the past seven years.
For the last five years, Walsh has participated in the annual Walk MS event and has raised more than $10,000 in that timeframe.
Multiple sclerosis is a potentially debilitating disease affecting the central nervous system. Symptoms can include, among other things, numbness in the limbs, difficulties with vision and speech, stiffness and, in some more severe cases, total paralysis. The progress, severity and specific symptoms of MS in any one person cannot be predicted. The cause is unknown and, as a result, there currently is no cure.
Established by the Connecticut Chapter in 2000, MS Corporate Achievers is a recognition program honoring some of Connecticut’s most influential leaders while at the same time raising critically needed funds to ensure ongoing scientific research and the continuation of vital programs and services offered by the chapter to Connecticut residents diagnosed with MS. Honorees are nominated by their peers and selected by an advisory council board for making outstanding contributions to business, civic and cultural enrichment.
Through participation, honorees join an elite leadership network sharing a commitment to making Connecticut a better place in which to live. Since 2000, honorees have raised nearly $600,000 to help end the devastating effects of multiple sclerosis.
