| Summer Street is closed due to an earlier gas explosion, August 3, 2006 |
Much of Stamford Downtown is without power this afternoon, August 3rd, Tuesday, as temperature in the city soared well into the high 90s, lower 100's. According to CL&P, about 5,000 customers in the Downtown area are without power and service is not expected to be back online before sometime late tonight.
The Hootie and the Blowfish gig, part of the Alive@Five concert series, will go on as scheduled tonight.
Thousands are expected to brave the current heat wave to see the hit band perform. The event will mark the conclusion of this year's Alive@Five outdoor concert series.
An earlier underground gas explosion forced Stamford Police to close Summer Street as crews were trying to repair the damage.
Temperatures are expected to ease out overnight and into the weekend.

HERE IS THE CT LIGHT AND POWER PRESS RELEASE REGARDING THE STAMFORD DOWNTOWN POWER OUTAGE
CL&P Forced to Cut Power in Stamford
Action Necessary to Insure Region Stability
BERLIN, Conn., August 3, 2006 -- Some 5,000 customers in downtown Stamford are having their power cut this morning by Connecticut Light & Power Company (CL&P). The action by CL&P is necessary to limit damage to existing underground power lines that have been taxed by high customer demand during the current heat wave.
Without this action, there is a strong possibility that extensive damage would occur to the system, requiring repairs that could take up to two weeks.
There is currently no indication how long the power will remain off, but CL&P is moving as quickly and as safely as possible to assess the situation and make repairs.
