Mitzvah Day 2008 will bring the Stamford community together to do good works for those in need

In the Jewish tradition, the word “mitzvah” connotes good deeds. Literally translated as “commandment,” and based on the precept that every commandment is for the good of the people, the word has evolved to refer to acts of kindness or good works. In the spirit of performing good works for the benefit of others, the Jewish Community Center of Stamford (JCC) will host its annual community Mitzvah Day on Sunday, October 5 from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the JCC on Newfield Avenue.

Mitzvah Day projects will include: making fleece hats and scarves for the children of Kids in Crisis and St. Luke’s Family Shelter; hair donation for Pantene’s Beautiful Lengths wig program; meal preparation for New Covenant House Soup Kitchen; a food drive at a local grocery store; visits to a family shelter and a local hospital; a Cove cleanup organized by Congregation Agudath Sholom and Young Israel of Stamford; an American Red Cross Blood Drive; preparation of a DVD shipment bound for American soldiers in Iraq; knitting blankets for the elderly; and a range of other craft and beautification projects suitable for all ages. Families are encouraged to participate.

Also during Mitzvah Day, Young Israel of Stamford will commission a Torah scroll in memory of Kerav Roitman, the Stamford boy who passed away this year at the age of two-and-a-half. A Torah scribe will be on hand at the JCC to demonstrate how the letters are written on the Torah’s parchment. The day will end with refreshments and Israeli dancing.

The JCC has also put out a call for donations of the following items in support of Mitzvah Day: Canned kosher food items, including tuna, salmon, soup and fruit for Stamford’s Kosher Food Pantry; and new men’s underwear and socks, in sizes large and extra-large, for Midnight Run, a program that delivers clothing, food and supplies to the homeless on the streets of New York City. Donations can be dropped off at the JCC, located at 1035 Newfield Avenue in Stamford.

Mitzvah Day is open to the community, and there is no charge to participate. For more information, contact Bob Abrams at 487-0958 or rabrams@stamfordjcc.org.
