Mayor Darnel P. Malloy announced today that the City has the lowest millrate of the five largest cities in Connecticut. Stamford's average millrate of 16.1 was by far the lowest. According to research of the five largest cities in Connecticut, Stamford's average millrate of 16.1 compared well in contrast to Bridgeport's at 44.58, Hartford's at 68.34, New Haven's at 42.21, and Waterbury's at 39.912. Not only was Stamford's millrate the lowest for real property, it is only 1.55 mills higher than Darien and 1.69 higher than Westport.

"That is amazing," said Mayor Malloy when reviewing the research. "I can't believe that we have achieved this level of success in limiting the tax burden on residents of Stamford. A millrate of 16.1 is something we can all be proud off

In addition to holding down real property taxes, Stamford's auto taxes are the lowest among the other five largest cities as well. Setting the auto tax to 24.00, while other large cities have auto tax rates that reflect the real property tax rates, places considerably less burden on the residents of Stamford who drive their cars to work. The "24 millrate on cars is remarkable as it is also the lowest that has been achieved by Stamford for the period going back as far as fiscal 1984-85," Mayor Malloy said.

In addition, Stamford has never received significant amounts of State grant dollars and the percentage of our school construction reimbursement continues to be extremely low. Our school construction rates remains at 28,1 whereby other large cities are at 79 to 80%, reflecting the maximum allowed. We have also not received the State grants that other large cities receive ranging from $241,347,089 in Hartford to $137,457,011 in Waterbury, Stamford receives just over $15,288,000.
