“The Great Treasure Hunt” is the theme for homecoming weekend at Second Congregational Church on Sept. 11-12. The event is free and open to the community. The church is at 139 E. Putnam Ave. in Greenwich.

On Saturday, Sept. 11, from 10 a.m. to 12 noon, the church will offer a program for younger children called “Seeking God in Science.” It will include a presentation by the Mad Science group, which provides programs at many local schools; a craft program; and a snack.

On Sunday, Sept. 12, during the church’s 10:30 a.m. worship service, the Rev. Robert H. Naylor, senior minister, will deliver an intergenerational sermon on “The Map to the Hidden Treasure.” A surprise animal guest will help with the sermon. The service will include music composed at the church’s summer vacation Bible school.

Immediately after the service, at 11:30 a.m., a barbecue luncheon will be served and a real treasure hunt will be held. Intergenerational teams will look for a treasure chest buried on the church campus, playing a game created by church member Brian Scanlon with Naylor’s assistance. Adult and younger participants will join to solve a crossword puzzle, apply its clues, and track down map clues. A bouncy castle and ice cream truck also will be part of the festivities.

“This year’s homecoming will be very special because our Sunday worship and the program following it will engage teams of people of all ages in searching for God’s hidden treasure,” Naylor said. “While our society frequently segregates people by age or socioeconomic position, Second Church makes a very intentional effort to create programs that bring the generations together.”

While not required, reservations for the Saturday event and the luncheon and program after the Sunday worship are strongly encouraged. To register for programs one or both days, contact Gloria LaDestro, church office manager, at 203-869-9311, ext. 120 or gloria@2cc.org. To learn more about the church, also visit www.2cc.org.
