The project consists of environmental restoration of the Mill River, including removing the dam at Main Street, removing the concrete walls creating the mill pond south of Broad Street, removal of an estimated 5,800 tons of sediment from the pond area, and extensive regrading. There will be exotic plant removal, new planting of native species and other restoration activities covering 1.5 acres. 1,100 feet of riverbed will be restored to a natural condition. The City's financial share of this construction work is $2.4 million, which was appropriated in recent years and provided to the Army Corps this summer. The Corps seeks to award a contract in October or November and to have a groundbreaking in winter 2009, Construction is expected to take up to 18 months and will be complemented by construction of park improvements that will make the reconstructed river accessible to the public and create the foundation for the larger northern portion of Mill River Park.
