A recent article in Circulation magazine says that ¾ of adult Americans know little or nothing about peripheral arterial disease (PAD). Unfortunately, 8 million Americans suffer from the circulatory disorder and may have mistaken its symptoms (leg or hip cramps and/or pain) for something else. A Stamford Hospital vascular surgeon will provide clues on how to identify this serious yet sometimes overlooked health disorder.

Stamford Hospital's Dr. Ben Marsan will lead a seminar on PAD called “Everything You Wanted to Know About PAD.” The event will take place at Tully Health Center ’s Brace Auditorium, 32 Strawberry Hill Court in Stamford on Wednesday, Nov. 7 from 6 – 8 p.m.

Dr. Marsan will provide an overview of the disease, explain its symptoms and offer attendees a free pulse volume recording, a screening that looks at the strength of a person's pulse in key points such as the feet and knees. To pre-register, call toll-free at (877) 233-WELL (9355).

A circulatory problem, PAD is caused by a blockage of blood vessels in the legs and can lead to health issues ranging from varicose veins to heart attack. Left untreated, PAD can even cause gangrene serious enough to require amputation.
