At his best, Joshua Redman seems a class apart for technique, invention and artistry. This US maestro has contemporary saxophone covered. He can do screams, honks and circular-breathing arpeggios with the best of them but merely as adjuncts to streams of wondrously clean, original ideas. A winner of the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Saxophone Competition, Joshua Redman and his Trio (Reuben Rogers and Greg Hutchinson) are coming to the Ridgefield Playhouse on Sunday, January 18 at 8 p.m. as part of the Danbury Audi Jazz Series.

An AllShows.com VIP Party Pass, which includes a cocktail party, food and priority parking, plus an artist meet and greet (when available), an hour prior to the event (for an additional charge) is available for this show.

Last spring, The New Yorker put Redman's album "Spirit of the Moment: Live at the Village Vanguard" on its list of 100 Essential Jazz Albums, between those of Chick Corea and Wynton Marsalis, not a bad position to be in. His latest recording, "Back East," was Grammy-nominated. Redman says of the album, there is "a sense of return to a style I associate with the east coast, a return to playing-for lack of a better description-modern, swing-based, acoustic jazz. This was and is my musical bread and butter, the core of what I do. That approach to playing is one I really immersed myself in and developed during my time on the east coast."

For tickets ($60) and further information about The Ridgefield Playhouse, call the box office at 203-438-5795; tickets may also be purchased online at ridgefieldplayhouse.org. The Playhouse is at 80 East Ridge, parallel to Main Street.
