Governor M. Jodi Rell today directed that both United States and Connecticut flags be flown at half staff on Thursday, May 15, in observance of Peace Officers’ Memorial Day.
National Peace Officers’ Memorial Day was designated as May 15 of each year by President John F. Kennedy in 1962. The week including May 15 is designated National Police Week.
“In every community, committed law enforcement officers watch over our neighborhoods and work to make our nation a safer, more peaceful place. As we observe Peace Officers’ Memorial Day, we honor the men and women who serve the cause of justice, and we pay tribute to those who have lost their lives in the line of duty.
“We owe a lasting debt to those who sacrificed their lives while serving and protecting our fellow citizens. Their courage and commitment have shown the true meaning of heroism. We offer our respect and prayers to their loved ones.
“On Peace Officers’ Memorial Day, we recognize and honor the service and sacrifice of the men and women whose devotion to duty brings honor to our system of justice and makes our state and our nation a better place. I further encourage all residents to display flags at half staff from their homes and businesses on Peace Officers’ Memorial Day.
Governor Rell directed that flags be returned to full staff at dusk on Thursday, May 15.
