Governor M. Jodi Rell today announced that $5 million for the Vidal Court public housing revitalization project in Stamford is expected to gain approval when the State Bond Commission meets next week. The project involves the demolition and removal of 216 obsolete moderate rental housing units that will be replaced by constructing a new community on the site that will feature 216 new affordable rental units and 134 new market-rate family rental units. A healthy mix of affordable and market-rate housing is an important way of creating vibrant communities that celebrate diversity, Governor Rell said. The new Vidal Court will feature a lower density setting that includes scattered-site housing units on adjacent properties that will be acquired as part of the new development. We know that affordable housing is essential in any community and even more so in the southwestern part of our state where housing prices are some of the highest in the nation. The total development cost of the project $24.4 million, with $20 million in funding by the Department of Economic and Community Development matched by $4.4 million from the Stamford Housing Authority. In addition to the demolition and replacement of existing obsolete housing units, off-site properties will be acquired in order to create a total of 350 family housing units. The new Vidal Court housing development will be a tremendous asset to the City of Stamford, Governor Rell said. By reducing the density of the existing site and creating an entirely new setting, we are making Vidal Court a true livable community.
