Hartford, CT - AARP Connecticut is kicking off the next phase of You’ve Earned a Say – a national conversation about the future of Medicare and Social Security – in Connecticut this summer with a series of community conversations in local cities and towns across the state, including Danbury (Aug. 14), Hartford (Aug. 22), Stratford (Aug. 28), Fairfield (Aug. 29), Enfield (Sept. 12) and Glastonbury (Sept. 18).
The meetings will include a facilitated discussion about how to find responsible commonsense solutions that will secure Medicare for future generations and how to prevent harmful cuts to Social Security so we can keep the promises we’ve made to seniors. Residents will have an opportunity to share their ideas and have a say about the future of programs that matter to them and their families.
AARP launched You’ve Earned a Say in 2012 and since then, the organization has engaged more than 10 million Americans in a dialogue about how to strengthen Medicare and Social Security. Through questionnaires, teletown halls, events, online actions, bus tours and other outreach, AARP heard loud and clear that people believe paying into the system means they’ve earned a voice in any debate about these vital programs.
In 2013, You’ve Earned a Say is taking what was learned and fighting for responsible solutions that will stabilize Medicare, such as clamping down on drug companies’ high prices, improving care coordination and use of technology, and cutting over-testing, waste and fraud. These are meaningful steps that can be taken now to reduce costs throughout the healthcare system without cutting benefits for or asking seniors to pay more. And, we’re urging the President and Congress to leave Social Security out of deficit negotiations and instead start a national debate about retirement security.
