Department of Consumer Protection liquor control agents, working with Connecticut State Police officers and two youth volunteers conducted alcohol compliance checks in Old Lyme on Saturday July 19th and identified five businesses that made unlawful sales of alcohol to minors, Consumer Protection Commissioner Jerry Farrell, Jr. said today.
The series of compliance checks was conducted in twelve Old Lyme stores and restaurants. Two underage volunteers, ages seventeen (17) and eighteen (18), trained and provided by the Governor’s Prevention Partnership, attempted to purchase alcoholic beverages in each of the locations.
“We routinely conduct these alcohol compliance checks in towns statewide,” Farrell said. “These operations are consistently useful in helping us identify licensed or permitted locations that are selling alcoholic beverages to minors.” However, Farrell added, the compliance checks are not intended to hurt local businesses.
“In no way do we try to trick or entice establishments to sell alcoholic beverages to youth,” Farrell said. “If asked for proof of age before making a liquor purchase, the volunteer youths will hand over their actual ID. Our objective is to find those businesses that are selling to minors and bring them into compliance with state law. We thank the Connecticut State Police and the Prevention Partnership for their cooperation and support.”
The establishments that failed Saturday’s compliance check are:
• Dairy Market Convenience, 389 Shore Road, Old Lyme
• Rooney’s Package Store, 268 Shore Road, Old Lyme
• Cool Moose Package Store, 53 Hartford Avenue, Old Lyme
• Hideaway Restaurant and Pub, 19 Halls Road, Old Lyme
• Clam’s Restaurant, 100 Shore Road
The seven locations that passed are:
• Pavilion Restaurant, 85 Swan Avenue, Old Lyme
• Lenny’s On The Beach, 88 Hartford Avenue, Old Lyme
• Coffees Country Market, 169 Boston Post Road, Old Lyme
• A & P Super Foodmart, 90 Halls Road, Old Lyme
• A & P Wines and Spirits, 28-A Halls Road, Old Lyme
• Rogers Lake Liquor Shoppe, 183 Boston Post Road, Old Lyme
• Illianos Italian Pizza Restaurant, 163 Boston Post Road, Old Lyme
The failed establishments are charged with selling liquor to a minor and will be brought before the Liquor Control Commission for an administrative hearing, at which time each will have the opportunity to address the charges.
