HARTFORD, CT - Do you know someone who has performed an extraordinary act of courage to save someone's life? Or maybe you know someone who commits countless hours to a special cause?

The Red Cross wants to help you honor and celebrate these individuals at its Community Heroes Breakfast Celebrations, Friday, March 7, 2014, in Hartford, Friday, May 9, 2014, in Trumbull and Friday, May 30, 2014, in Groton. Each year, the Red Cross in Connecticut accepts nominations from the public for recognition of people who go above and beyond in service to others, exemplifying the spirit of the Red Cross mission. These heroes are honored in recognition of their good works.

The Red Cross touches lives in our state every day through programs and services such as Disaster Relief; Service to the Armed Forces; and Preparedness and Health & Safety Training. As an organization committed to helping people prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies in our communities, the Red Cross is honored to salute individuals who make a difference.

This year's Heroes celebrations will be held Friday, March 7, 2014, at the Hartford Marriott Downtown, Friday, May 9, 2014, at the Marriott Hotel in Trumbull and Friday, May 30, 2014, at the Mystic Marriott in Groton.

Nominate your Community Hero for deeds that occurred in the last 15 months. Nominations must be received by December 31, 2013 to be considered for this year’s event. The nominee must live or work in, or the event must occur in, Connecticut. Nominations may be made for both living and posthumous Heroes. Details about the Heroes Celebration and an online nomination form are available at the Red Cross website, www.redcross.org/ct/heroes.

“Every day, Red Cross volunteers are involved with helping disaster victims or people who risk their lives for others and with people who learn through our health and safety training how to save lives,” said American Red Cross spokesman Paul Shipman. “Many of these people are unsung heroes. Community Heroes of Connecticut gives us an opportunity to honor our neighbors who do extraordinary things every day.”

Shipman said nominees from across the state are welcome. For more information about the Red Cross Community Heroes Celebration and sponsorship opportunities, contact Devin Cleary at (860) 678-4310 or email him at devin.cleary@redcross.org.
