“It is no secret that in this time of economic uncertainty small businesses and municipalities are struggling with their bottom lines,” said Bysiewicz. “Communities across Connecticut are begging for tax relief. By expanding the purchasing power of the state pool, we can save taxpayer dollars and drive down health care costs for the small business community that is responsible for more than 90% of all new jobs in our state. Bysiewicz continued, “Governor if you are serious about expanding quality, affordable health care that will cut costs for small businesses, if you are serious about giving cities and towns a break, you will sign into law the Health Care Partnership!”. Over the past four months, the bill’s author, House Majority Leader Christopher G. Donovan, and Secretary of the State Susan Bysiewicz have traveled across Connecticut conducting roundtables for small business owners, elected officials, and not-for-profit organizations. “The Connecticut Healthcare Partnership will provide municipalities, small business and non-profits with quality healthcare that costs less.” Rep. Donovan said. “During these tough economic times, this is a good way to help small businesses and their employees with the overwhelming cost of healthcare. The governor should sign the bill.” The sheer volume of the state's pool of more than 200,000 people puts Connecticut in a strong position when it comes time to negotiate rates. For the 2007-2008 year there is a 0.0 percent increase in the state's health insurance costs for employees and retirees. “If ever there was a time when providing access to affordable, quality healthcare would make a difference for small businesses, it is now, when so many businesses are teetering between success and failure,” said John Hopper, CEO of Power Marketing Partners, has five full time employees and is based in Stamford, CT. “The time is now,” Hopper continued, “Let’s not wait for more businesses to fold before realizing we had the opportunity to help them and we didn’t take it. I am asking Governor Rell to sign this bill because it substantially reduces costs for thousands of small businesses like mine in our state. And I say that as a registered Republican who voted for Jodi Rell for Governor.” According to Jessica Sager, Executive Director of All Our Kin, a New Haven not-for-profit: “Every dollar we have to spend on providing health insurance for our employees is one dollar less we can spend on child care and education services for the families that need us.” © Copyright by StamfordPlus.com.
