New business owners from around Connecticut attended the Department of Revenue Services (DRS) “Tax Help Day.” The event was a sell-out at the DRS main office new location at 450 Columbus Boulevard in downtown Hartford.
Said DRS Commissioner Kevin B. Sullivan, “As a service oriented agency, creating a more business-friendly climate is not a goal we just talk about -- but something we work hard at every day. Our customer focus is always on the taxpayer and being more user-friendly. New businesses especially need support and guidance to be successful, continue to grow and create new jobs.”
Invitations were sent to businesses who recently registered with the DRS. Reservations had to close early having reached full capacity with 366 registrations.
The DRS Tax Help Day presentations included
Getting Started in Business - which provided information and resources on what is expected of a newly registered business.
The Taxpayer Service Center (TSC) - the on-line portal used to file tax returns and make payments.
Sales Tax Overview - that covered the basics of sales and use tax, how and when to use exemption certificates, and good record keeping techniques.
CT DRS employees answered questions on a wide variety of tax topics during and after the event.
“Every day, without exception, DRS services are a main discussion point between our business advisors, entrepreneurs, and small business owners. Our clients in attendance, each of whom are in various stages of business, found much value in each presentation,” said Mary Kay Della Camera, Microenterprise Business Advisor, CT Small Business Development Center, UConn School of Business (CTsbdc.com). “Understanding CT laws and regulations is an essential part of running a business.”
After the two hour sessions concluded, attendees completed a feedback survey where 90% responded the information was helpful and 89% had all their questions answered. Additional comments included, “The information was very informative. The only thing that would make it better would be a longer, more in depth session. The Sales Tax speaker was great.”
In the coming months, more state Tax Help Day programs will be scheduled around Connecticut.
