Commissioner of Revenue Services Kevin B. Sullivan announced that since the 2012 Connecticut income tax filing season began on Tuesday, January 22, the more than 3,500 state returns have already been processed.

Said Commissioner Sullivan, “Connecticut tax collections were not affected by the federal fiscal cliff that delayed federal tax collections. So far, we have processed 3,833 electronic and paper returns. We have also already issued 1,225 income tax refunds.”

Commissioner Sullivan reminded taxpayers that this is the second year for working families to benefit from the state’s earned income tax credit and urged eligible taxpayers to seek out free tax preparation assistance from VITA and other community resources. He also said that the taxpayers who do not chose direct deposit for refunds of less than $5,000 will again receive their refund in the form of a debit card that, once easily activated, can be cashed at any VISA-affiliated bank or used to make purchases from vendors that accept VISA.

Commissioner Sullivan added that the Department of Revenue Services (DRS) is also launching a new taxpayer refund protection program. Said Commissioner Sullivan, “We need to do all we can to fight identity theft and tax fraud. Affected taxpayers may experience a small delay in receiving a refund but it’s a small inconvenience compared to a big gain in security.”

Due to the refund protection programs, some taxpayers will be notified in writing, asked to call DRS, and requested to provide additional identity information. This initiative is estimated to prevent an additional $10 million in income tax fraud.

For access to the DRS income tax calculator, property tax calculator, and free electronic Taxpayer Service Center filing program, visit the DRS website at www.ct.gov/DRS and select Individuals. Customer service callers should dial (800) 382-9463 (within Connecticut, but outside the Greater Hartford area) or (860) 297-5962 (from anywhere).
