Local CT cinematographer, Christo Bakalov, will receive the award for Artistic Excellence in Cinematography at the conclusion of the Connecticut Film Festival in Danbury this weekend.

Christo’s impressive resume includes features, documentaries, and TV shows, and he has worked all over the world and has been recognized with eight other prestigious professional awards.

The festival will show five of Bakalov’s films: “Americanizing Shelley,” 2006, Director of Photography; “Whirlygirl,” 2003, Director of Photography, and “Samsara”, Cinematographer, 2001, and also the narrative shorts shot in CT: “Glacier Bay” and “Love And Class in Connecticut”. He will be awarded at a ceremony on Saturday, May 24, 2008 at 7 p.m. at Palace Theatre in Danbury, CT before the screening of the movie “Americanizing Shelley”.

Christo is not a stranger to Fairfield County. After moving to the United States from his native Bulgaria in 1998, he settled in Connecticut and soon he started working for Cablevision’s News 12, CT.

“Connecticut is a very nice place to be, lo live and to film in,” says Christo. “As a news-photographer [with News 12] I had a chance to see the beauty of that state, to see many different locations, to meet many interesting people and I noticed that there is a real potential for filmmaking in this state. There is a large variety of beautiful locations around here, and most importantly there are many very talented people in Connecticut. Because of these facts and also owing to the consistent efforts of the CT government for the last few years, I strongly believe the film industry will grow fast in the state of CT.”

Bakalov was drawn into the world of photography in 4th grade, when he enrolled in a sill photography class at school. For many, the class was just another necessary part of the curriculum, but not for Christo. He fell in love with photography and adopted it as a hobby. “Since then over the years I developed more and more an interest of filmmaking and it just came naturally for me to make my professional choice, because I loved it and I still love it,” exclaims Christo.

The critically acclaimed work of Christo is often described as distinctive with style, delicacy and poetic expression.

Christo recently returned from India, where he shot “Colors of Passion,” directed by renowned Indian director Ketan Mehta. He is currently working for the national weekly TV show BusinessWeekTV while awaiting his next feature project.
