Product Safety Inspectors from the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection are conducting recall effectiveness checks in response to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s voluntary recall of Pacific Science U-Shaped Magnets, Bar Magnets, Magnet Needle Sets and Magnet Sets, due to a lead paint hazard. Sold nationwide primarily to educational institutions and educational stores, the magnets may be circulating in the mainstream marketplace. These magnets were manufactured in China, imported by Pacific Science Supplies, Inc. of Bensenville, Illinois, and sold from April 2000 to February 2008 for approximately $9.00. They are as follows:

* “LARGE’ AND “SMALL” U-SHAPED MAGNETS: The Horseshoe or “U” Shaped magnets are painted red and blue. The red side has “N” imprinted on it and “S” is imprinted on the blue half.

* “LARGE” & “MINIATURE” BAR MAGNETS: These red and white bar shaped magnets have the letter “N” imprinted on the red half and the letter “S” imprinted on the white half.

* MAGNET SETS: Labeled “Magnets & Compasses”, this set contains 2 small bar magnets, 2 small compasses and one small U-Shaped magnet. The magnets are painted half red and half white. “N” is imprinted on the red half and the letter “S” is imprinted on the white half.

* MAGNET NEEDLE SETS: The magnets in this set are half red and half white. This product consists of 10 sets of small cone-shaped bases and elongated-diamond shaped magnets which can be connected into the bases.

Consumer Protection Commissioner Jerry Farrell, Jr., strongly recommends that consumers and schools check for the recalled magnets and if found, cease using immediately and contact the importer for a free replacement. Although no injuries/incidents have been reported, the potential for lead exposure is high. To receive the free replacement or for additional questions, please contact Pacific Science Supplies Inc, Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. CT, toll free at (800) 530-1500 or visit their website at www.pacsciusa.com .
